hi there!
Recently to my supprise the recent mounted devices (I don't know how to call it cause I've got a Polish language installed) stop working. i.e when I plug-in a device (pendrive for instance) nothing is happen so I have to mount manually. I'm certain for a 100% I didn't install (or re-install) any important part of the system (HAL for example). I have KDE 4.2.4 installed on Gentoo. Hope you can help me cheers, Wojtek |

Are your devices in the output of "lshal" and "solid-hardware list"? ( The second will generate a list of udi's which you should be able to match up to the output of lshal )

with pen drives or other USB storage devices, if the previous user didn't unmount the device properly, i.e, under windows just plugged the thing out instead of right-clicking on some icon and asking MS to disconnect the device, it keeps an entry in some log file saying that it's still in use.
in that case you'll have to manually mount the device, something like mount -t ntfs /dev/hdb1 [or whatever applies] /your-mountpoint this will generate an error, saying that the device is still in use, but offer an alternative command to force mounting it anyway (at least it does on my system). can't remember that command, don't have any pen drive at hand, and don't seem to find it in my man pages right now, but if you try, you'll probably find out... phani. PS [edit]: if the device got recognized by your USB system, you should be able to see it by running fdisk -l; this also gives you the proper /dev to mount manually. |
