When trying to learn how to modify Kmenu, I tried to drag-and-drop Konquerer into the Trash Can in my panel. Instead, I got a grey box next to the Trash Can I can't remove. Left clicking has no response; right clicking gives me generic choices to do with the Panel (Add Widget, Add Panel, Lock Widget, Panel Settings, Remove This Panel).

How do I remove that dead spot from the Panel?

I have encountered this before. I believe simply reorganising your widgets will solve this problem. Drag a few of them around and it should simply vanish. If that fails, try resizing the panel also.

That did not solve the problem, and made matters worse. Now, the grey rectangle is still there, and the panel is now reduced in size to about 2/3 of the width. I try to resize it, and it won't go back to full size even if I click and drag it; it stops and won't go full width.

It appears you have encountered a bug in Plasma. Please file a bug report for this issue, attaching your plasmarc, plasma-desktoprc and plasma-desktop-appletsrc if you are running 4.3.

If you are not running 4.3, can you please upgrade to KDE 4.3, since this issue may already be fixed.

To fix it for yourself, you can always remove plasma configs from ~/.kde/share/config (this is the last resort measure though)

This will remove all your desktop settings and plasmoid configuration.

I have had this problem. I have been able to fix it by adding a new widget, and dropping the widget in the gray area (make sure it shows the + icon).
