Hi, when I click on the logout icon, there is a picture of a full moon. I want to change it and use a custom logout picture, but I cannot find the file I have to replace.
In kde3, the file was /usr/share/apps/ksmserver/pics/shutdownkonq.png What's it in kde4? |

The logout dialog is dependent on the plasma theme you are using. The picture is in a SVG file (the standard is in /usr/share/kde4/apps/desktoptheme/default/dialogs/shutdowndialog.svgz - replace /usr with the output of kde4-config --prefix)

Ah, I see...
any chance to use a png instead? If not, how can I convert a png to svgz? Gimp does not seem to do this, when I tried to edit the picture and save, it told me svgz was an unknown format. But it did open it... |

Restart plasma by kquitapp plasma-desktop plasma-desktop And look at the logout dialog. |

As an alternative to what JanGerrit suggested: you can always use the "Desktop theme details" module of systemsettings. If you have more than one theme installed that is, and if you prefer the one included in that other theme. I.e. if you like the Oxygen plasma-theme but prefer the logout picture of say Aya instead.
If you want your very own picture though, that method won't work.

remember to embed the png file into the svg, else the first time you move your png file everything gets screwed. just go to the menu effects->images->embed all images.
the png will then be contained entirely in the svg, not just a link like inkscape does by default.

Is there any way I can just use a png instead of svg? Maybe some config file where I can tell it to use png instead?
svg imho sucks big time, and inkscape is a real pain! I don't want to use it! |

It is not possible to do that, as the Plasma framework requires scalable artwork, which cannot be provided in PNG format. SVG does not suck and is used throughout KDE, especially for the Oxygen icons project ( although these are pre-rendered for efficiency and due to some SVG implementations having bugs )

KDE now using svg all over? For me, that's just another reason to hate kde4! No, really, it was so easy before, everything could be customized just with a root konqueror and gimp within a few minutes!
I don't want to sound like a troll, but for me, that's the straw that broke the camel's back - I'M GOING BACK TO KDE 3.5! And when it's hopelessly outdated, I'm gonna switch to gnome! I loved 3.5 despite its flaws (media: protocol, no background plugin for compiz) but kde4 is like vista for me - looks like vista and almost as complicated to freely customize! By the way, is anyone doing a kde3 fork yet? |

No, as KDE3 is still available out there... |

But it's no longer updated, or am I wrong on that? |

Yes.
Though it probably will not get any major updates anymore (from 3.5.10 to 3.6 e.g.), there are still bugfixes coming in. But do a search on the forum, there are already many topics about it around. |
