Right click on desktop -> Desktop Settings (or Appearance Settings, depending on which version you use) -> New Theme... -> (Choose a theme) -> Install.

Did exactly that, twice, but the new themes are nowhere to be found, yet the "plasma workspace add on installer" shows a "un-install" button for each. I've looked in, /home/username/.kde/share/apps/desktoptheme and the new themes were not download to that directory. So, to what directory are new themes downloaded? Ah, just found them. They was downloaded to, /tmp/kde-username for whatever reasons. Thanks.

Go to System Settings, click on the Workspace Appearence, then go to Desktop Theme section, find at the bottom of the page "Get New Decorations" and type the theme you want to install. Pretty much all the avalible themes are there,so there is very small chance that it wouldn't find it. Give it a try and let me know.
Thank you. Best regards |

Desktop specs for this update:
Qt: 4.8.1 KDE Development Platform: 4.8.4 (4.8.4) Plasma Desktop Shell: 0.4
Here is view of the system settings screen as of Y2012M07D13: The following tips might be useful for newbies and people who are unfamiliar or new to the Plasma desktop under KDE. For a default installation:
Once System Settings is clicked, look for the section called "Workspace Appearance and Behavior" (see the graphic previously posted in this message). Then locate and click on the "Workspace Appearance" icon in that section. From here the rest of Nazko's tip should suffice. This is all basically the same as what Nazko was saying with a bit more guidance for the newbie. Credit and thanks should still go to Nazko for the tip. However, it should be noted that non of the above instructions give the end user a way to install a theme that has been downloaded to the local hard drive from a websites such as http://kde-look.org/ For example if you find a plasma theme such as the following http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/H2 ... ent=136498 You'll notice that there is a download button which, a new user of KDE might think is the only way to obtain the theme... or is it? Following Nazko's directions once you've clicked on "Desktop Theme" you'll notice a button near the lower right hand side of that screen labeled "Get New Themes". Once you have clicked on that button a new screen appears with a search feature located near the lower right. To search for the example theme that was found on kde-look.org, all that is needed is to type in H2O into that search box. Your new theme should appear as part of the search results. Just click on install next to the theme to install it. Ok so you've got your theme but you'll notice that didn't change the color scheme (for example the foreground text color vs. the background color in the system settings window itself). So how do you get a color scheme? Under system settings again, look in the section titled "Common Appearance and Behavior" and select "Application Appearance" (yeah I know, all the theme and color stuff should be in the same section but *shrug* what can you do?) From there you can choose "color" and get new color schemes for almost any window that you can open. Hope that helps. |

always a bit easier using the "get new themes" in systemsettings
assuming you're running 5 extract the tar into ~/.local/share/plasma/desktoptheme and it should show in systemsettings |
