Annotation layer / OSD-like feature

Mon Nov 23, 2009 8:27 pm
Is there a way to draw things on top of everything else (including video), in an annotation layer or OSD kind of way.Does plasma allow this? Or would it be some Kwin exposed feature?

PS: raised by this discussion.

Yes it is possible. Whilst no class pre-exists for it, you simply need to create a QGraphicsWidget with no parent, and apply the appropriate WindowFlags to it so the window manager does not decorate or manage the OSD.

would that also 'work' when switching desktops and zooming in or out. By 'work' I mean appear as a true OSD overlay, which does not follow the rest of the changes. Also, is this platform independent? (i.e. everywhere Qt runs)
