REALLY SCREWED UP

Sun Nov 29, 2009 7:55 pm
okay so i got an update on my ubuntu which allowed me the option to choose between gnome or KDE, so i choose KDE, I LOVE IT. but theres some major problems. in like menus and stuff IE the command prompt Alt-F2, or the HELP search bar. it won't let me type anything, sometimes it will show that i am able to type there but whenever i press the keys it just won't type it. seconde, i wasn't able to close/maximize/minimize ANY windows at all and every window i opened stayed on top no matter what and is unable to move even with alt-left mouse button. so i looked in help and there's supposed to be the three buttons at the top right of the screen but there wasn't.... i am at a loss, i love the look of KDE but it just is fighting me every step of the way, can someone please diagnose this problem so i can get to fixing it.

Can you please provide a screenshot of this? It seems you may be missing a Window Manager ( this provides the minimize, maximize and close buttons )

Re: REALLY SCREWED UP  Topic is solved

Windows: sounds like there's a problem with your window manager. The default one in KDE is called KWin, you can run it like this from a terminal:
Code: Select all
kwin --replace

Regard Alt+F2 (KRunner), it sounds like something is broken with your setup. To take a screenshot you can use the application KSnapshot.

Usually this sort of thing happens when you have upgraded rather than done a clean install, in that some configuration files carried over are fighting the current installation. The first think I'd try is to go to ~/.kde(4)/share/config and rename every rc file that starts with 'plasma'. You will lose any display settings and have to do them afresh, but I suspect that you might find at least some of your problems solved when default ones are re-created. If I'm wrong it's easy enough to delete the new ones and change the names of the old ones back.
