Hi, I recently update to KDE Software Compilation 4.3.4 on Kubuntu Karmic 9.10. I encountered a slow down in transition from Ksplash (KDE logo stage) to desktop.
Problematic behaviour: KDE start is delayed by about 10 seconds in splash screen (in final stage, when KDE logo is displayed). Expected behaviour: KDE logo during splash disappears even before it is fully unblured. - I change the splash screen to SimpleSmall, I can access the desktop in same the position as KDE icon (SimpleSmall splash has nothing fancy but only a black progress bar). Still have to wait 10-15s for it to blur out. When the splash's black progress bar is filled, the log in sound is played. Then I try to disable login sound, no luck, still the extra 10-15s compare to 4.3.3. EDIT: After try my luck with google, the behaviour is similiar to this bug https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=206788 but the cause is different. I can't pinpoint mine >.< Any help is deeply appreciated. |

Could you please try to reproduce with a new user?

Not reproducible on a new user account. May I know how to proceed with the next step? Preferably to be able to save all my configs Thanks

Then it's probably something with your configuration. You could try with clean Plasma config files and see if it helps.
1. Quit Plasma.
2. In ~/.kde4/share/config (sometimes it's .kde instead of .kde4), move all files starting with plasma-desktop to a safe location (as a backup). 3. Log out and in. Plasma will recreate the files you moved with the default settings. Do you still have the same problem?

Thank you very much. It is fast like the good old 4.3.3 now. Just lost all my activities and plasmoid config though, I mean I have to manually add again. Let me re-add then report whether one of the plasmoid caused the problem.

I found the culprit. As long as I add a new Activity, the slowness will kick in regardless of number of plasmoid. If there is only one activity then the transition is blazing fast. Should I file a bug?

I'd say so. At launchpad at first (since I see you're using Kubuntu), since I at least can't reproduce it in either openSuse or Debian. Moved to plasma since that's the culprit.

Nice that you found a way to reproduce it. Yes, please report (I can't reproduce it on my system either - Arch with KDEMod4 packages).

I can reproduce exactly the same bug in Kubuntu. A real shame, since activities per desktop are really useful. Did you file a launchpad bug report? Incidentally, this is from an unofficial ppa, I am not sure what's the best place to report this.
FWIW, in my case, the boot to full desktop (as measured with a script I wrote) went from 27 to 36 seconds right after the update, and now back to 27 as soon as I removed the individual desktops and removed all plasma config files. This is a Dell Mini 9. Thank you all for the help! |

More info. I tried adding desktop activities again (one for each virtual desktop) and it is still fast, apparently some old setting was getting plasma stuck while loading!
Anyway, I am so glad I found this thread, good work everyone! |

I made 2 bugs report at launchpad and kde bugzilla respectively as follow:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=217394 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/492681 So far, one more person has the similar syndrome on kde bug tracker. @lmilano I removed plasma-desktop-appletsrc and plasma-desktoprc, then add new activity again but it didn't fix it. |
