Is there a way to do this? I know there was a way in past KDE releases, but the right click on the desktop no longer takes you to desktop settings like it did in KDE 4.3. I'd like to know if this is possible, to have the menu bar up top, like a Mac.

It sort-of is. What you can do is:
1. Add a panel to the top of the screen. 2. Install Bespin. 3. Add the Xbar plasmoid on to the new top panel (part of Bespin). For four, there are two alternatives: 4, version 1. Switch the Style from Oxygen to Bespin. Now all KDE4 and Qt4 apps should render their menues in the new panel. 4, version 2. Install or compile Qtcurve with Xbar enabled. Switch the style from Oxygen to Qtcure, and you're set to go. Bespin still needs to be installed though.

Bespin is installed, but I can't get my plasma theme to be Bespin. It's not an option.
FWIW, I installed Bespin from the Ubuntu repos.

I don't think there's a Bespin Plasma theme, but you have to use the Bespin style (System Settings -> Appearance -> Style) to use xbar as far as I know.

And if you don't like the Bespin-style, Qtcurve can be used. However, the xbar feature in qtcurve is still considered experimental so you most likely have to compile it yourself in order to enable the feature. Still, regardless of whether you use bespin or qtcurve: xbar is still somewhat lacking - the most obvious missing feature is that gtk, gnome, and kde3 apps are not affected by it.

Is there an alternative to xbar?

So, any plan about gnome3?
It is said that gnome3 will incorporate global-menu feature. at that time I think we can put gnome global menu into xbar, thus make xbar support both qt and gtk programs. |

offtopic: Is there a KDE beta PPA to subscribe to? Or one that's more up to date than the Kubuntu beta PPA? /offtopic

The xBar plasmoid on a panel doesn't work for me. It makes Plasma crash and I can't get it started again (now I can, because I reinstalled Kubuntu a few weeks ago). So I will not use it again until it's stable.
Any other alternative? |

In Kubuntu 10.04 with KDE 4.4.3 XBar still doesn't work for me. It doesn't crash, but it also doesn't take over the menu's. It only shows Plasma and the open windows, but menu bar

Do you use the Bespin style? Those who are interested in getting a global menubar, see http://agateau.wordpress.com/2010/05/10 ... n-windows/

Yes, I activated the Bespin style before adding the XBar plasmoid.
That thing for 10.10 sure looks great, but it isn't released yet And even then, XBar is supposed to work. |

There are no other solutions right now but there is a more general solution currently in development.
