Getting Desktop Folder back . . .

Fri Jan 15, 2010 11:16 pm
While some want to get rid of the Desktop Folder . . .
for me, while getting the add widget to include the Trash Can (Fedora 11 KDE had it there already)
in this Fedora12KDE Live USB with 1GB overlay all settings get saved and that Desktop Folder I have grown to cherish now stays off . . .

Yes, I can go into Dolphin to open files, but I rather liked having it on all the 4 desktops -
I'm sure it should be fairly easy to get back - but how ?
I just can't find the way yet.

Thank you.

It depends on how you want it back. Do you want a Plasma Widget so you can display multiple folders? Or do you want a more "traditional" desktop?

For traditional, right click on the Desktop > Desktop Activity Settings > Activity. Change the type to "Folder View".

Thanks for the quick reply . . .

ok, that worked just as you said . . . for the traditional view - on all 4 Desktops . . .

But how about to return the original "Plasma" view into the upper one-fourth of the Desktop(s) ?
(still getting used to KDE but found I do like it). There is no Desktop choice in the long widget list.

Anyway, I thought this traditional Desktop would work fine enough for the immediate -
EXCEPT . . .I use Konsole alot (running a dhcp and tftp server and tcpdump) and
with this traditional Desktop I do lose Konsole coming up with right-click in the menu in the top right corner -
This is what is easiest about me using KDE . . . so I am back awaiting any further advice for the original plasma type Desktop folder.

Thanks.

The original type can be restored by following the method previously explained, except change it to "Desktop" from "Folder View".

You can add a view to the ~/Desktop file by right clicking and selecting "Add Applet", then finding and dragging a "Folder View" applet to the desktop.

I had already switched back to the default Desktop view - as it is the only other choice -
so that Konsole (terminal) comes up with right-click to desktop or in upper right corner - but that "plasma-like" Desktop folders "area" is gone -
I may have only "X"'d it out by mistake moving Trash Can into it - but where is it ?

I have tried to find any "Add Applet" - but all I get is "Add Panel" - it seems close but even after playing with Panel Settings I don't get to drop folders in.
And right-click over Desktop folder in Dolphin doesn't bring up that choice either, so not exactly sure where to right-click for the applet choice.

I have found out more just looking around - like adding the number of Desktops . . . and that will be handy for me.

I'll check back later if you or anyone has an idea what I am doing wrong -
I'm gonna spend my time in some eth1 interface and server config files for now anyway - I am very happy with working in F12 Live KDE USB as I have it now anyway.

Thank you very much

Add the Folder View widget like this:

Image

Note that your widgets have to be unlocked. If you don't have that yellow icon you can also right-click on your desktop and choose Unlock Widgets and Add Widgets.

If you use the default Desktop activity (the thing you changed in Desktop Settings) you can also drag a folder from Dolphin. You should get a popup where you can choose "Folder View" (if you use a recent version of KDE SC, that is - I didn't see that version number mentioned anywhere in the topic).

Oh, and if you liked those animations you can find more in the Plasma HowTo. ;)

ok, yes that was it . . .
I was dragging a folder to the desktop from a new mounted USB drive to get some files - and I then clicked on Folder View.

After I saw that, I went into Dolphin and did the same with the Desktop folder.

It all makes good sense now.

Tack mycket !
