Google Widgets

Tue Feb 09, 2010 2:03 am
When installing some Google widgets, a message comes up with a warning of sorts. when i went to install A Google Dictionary widget, it stated::

Google has not tested or verified the features or security of this third party Gadget. Please confirm that you want to install:

Dictionary
http://bobtxt.googlepages.com/eDictionary.gg

Description: Dictionary from Dictionary.com

Required permissions:
Reads content of local files and directories
Creates or modifies local files and directories
Queries or modifies the status of hardware devices
Accesses network
Accesses personalization data
Executes native code and local applications

Well, I have a couple of these installed. How safe are they? If they are not safe (or questionable), how do I remove the from my Widget app?

BTW, the new KDE4 is simply amazing! I didn't think I was going to like it, but I find myself loving it more and more each day!

As with anything installed from the internet, it could be Malicious. In the case of the example above, assuming it functions it is probably safe. However the list of permissions requested is quite high.

I'm thinking it is safe, as well. And the message can simply be something Google posts for all third party gadgets. Plus, from what I gather, when installing widgets/gadgets, they are installed at the user level, not as Root.

But let's say I want to remove the widget/gadget. How is this done?

The same dialog used for installing them should also be used to remove them.

Unfortunately, I see no option in the Add Widgets dialog. I'v tried right clicking, etc. Nothing. I can stop the widgets from running, but I cannot remove them from the list.

You will need to carefully remove the correct sub-folder from $(kde4-config --localprefix)/share/apps/plasma-desktop/

Thank you!:) I'l check that out when I get back in forn ot for my PCLinxuOS system.

BTW, I was told by someone else that I could remove a folder from .kde4/share/apps/plasma/plamoids. is this the same location (only specific to my Linux distro?) Or would i need to remove from both locations?

Again, I'll have a look when I return to my system.

It could possibly install them in ~/.kde4/share/apps/plasma/ instead. Its been a while since I installed a Plasmoid from kde-apps.org though.
