Added icons ALL go to desktop 1.

Tue Feb 16, 2010 11:13 pm
The reason I left kde-3.5 to go 4.x.x was the possibility to have different desktops for different activities.
I now have 6 desktops with seperate activities.I really like that.
Now with ctrl-tab I can quickly jump from one to the other.
Putting new icons on a particular desktop took some trickery in 4.3.5 but it worked.
Now in 4.4 this trick doesn't work anymore.
So I was on desktop 4 (sound) and wanted to add an icon for juk.
Rightclicking on an empty part of the desktop didn't work anymore.
So I went to the menu brought up juk rightclicked on it,add to desktop:nothing.
Later I found out that it installs the icon alright but on desktop 1.
No matter on which desktop you are, added icons all go to desktop 1.
What should I do to get new icons there where I want them?

You can
1. Unlock widgets.
2. Drag the icons to the desktop.

Which desktop type do you use - normal "Desktop" or "Folder View"? The latter provides a more traditional desktop suited for icons.

Thanks for answering.
Where do I find "Unlock widgets"?
I think I am using normal desktop.
The "Folderview" thingy is gone!
I had it in 4.3.5 and used it to
place new icons on the desktops.
This is like pulling teeth.
Gerard.
PS Isn' it high time to have an up to date Howto?

Maybe you want to check out the Plasma HowTo.
(Unfortunately I haven't had time to update it to 4.4 yet, I'm still running 4.3.4 myself :()

If you want to unlock your widgets you can
- Click on the toolbox (yellow thing) -> Unlock Widgets, or
- Right click on desktop -> Unlock Widgets.

If you want you can then add a new Folder View to your desktop. That's the "box" which shows a content of a folder. If you want a traditional desktop, see this screencast:

It looks similar in KDE SC 4.4 if I remember correctly, but you need to click on "Activity" in the list on the left (below "Wallpaper).

Thanks for replying.

Click on the toolbox (yellow thing) -> Unlock Widgets, or
- Right click on desktop -> Unlock Widgets.
Neither has Unlock Widgets.

I've had enough.I'll go back to 4.3.5.
With Gentoo that's easy.

I get the impression none of you read/understood my first post.
When I rightclick on the desktop or on the cashew I don't see
"Unlock Widgets" for the simple reason that they weren't locked.
Having different activities coupled to different desktops only makes sense when you can have separate sets of applications that you can start by clicking on an icon on the specific desktop.
The widgets that you get when you click "add widgets" are not what I am looking for.
For instance I want the regular "Gimp" icon on the desktop where I do graphical work.
This doesn't work!
And it has nothing to do with things being locked or unlocked. The icons all go to desktop one.
I filed a bug but I am afraid nobody will look at it.
If this proves to be impossible to do then the whole idea of activities makes no sense.Might as well have just one desktop for all the work you do.
Gerard.
PS Isn't there a system to send mail to a poster when someone answers?

Regarding the notifications system, yes there is one, however it will only function if you are subscribed to the topic ( the default if you reply )

Another place to check might be any spam filters.

Thanks for your answer.
But the notification doesn't work.
Also nothing in my spam box.

You can try dragging the icon from the menu onto the (unlocked) desktop and the icon should pop up on the current desktop where you dragged it.

The behavior you describe (right-click on icon in menu -> add to desktop: icon added to first activity regardless of current activity) does sound like a bug which should be submitted to bugs.kde.org.

Thanks a lot airdrik,
Finally something that works!
I had to switch from classic menu style to kick off and then it works.
The icons now get on the right desktop, hope they stay put.
I already filed a bug as I indicated in an earlier post.
I wish the help files were brought up to date.
I am also having problems with kscd, the help file is for kscd-3.5!
I installed audacious and use that instead.
Anyway thanks again,
Gerard.
