hello,
plasma-desktop crashes on startup. for a moment i can see a desktop which disappears then appears again as if it would try a restart and then goes away again. i'm left with a black screen, no panels, no right-click menu, only a message window that informs of the crash of plasma-desktop. krunner and other apps are working fine. i just reinstalled my system for other reasons but still the same problem with plasma-desktop. i also tried to move my .kde and .kde4 folder away but still the same behaviour (although different error messages). i checked forums and lists but nothing helped this is the terminal output (with .kde and .kde4 folder moved back to home):
thank you for your help! bas

Does running plasma-desktop manually on krunner work?
Try moving just ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma* instead of the whole ~/.kde4 folder? If that doesn't help you'll want to provide the following info: Your KDE version and distro (and whether you're using any non-default repos) The crash trace (you can find it in the message window reporting the crash) |

If you are using Qt 4.6.0, please upgrade to Qt 4.6.2.
Which widgets did you use prior to the upgrade, and can you reproduce under a new user?

hello,
so far, no luck -running plasma-desktop from krunner does the same thing as atrting it from a terminal or at startup. -moving ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma* does not change anything -i made a new user and get the same results with this terminal output:
i remember that i had installed three widgets before my reinstall: one where you can see the moon phases, another which shows fotos of the sun and a third which can control amarok. i had more installed but i removed them. i use debian testing with the default and multimedia repositories the next thing i will try is to create a crash trace but i think i have to install some things before that bye bas |

before i forgot to post my qt version; it is 4.5.3
do you think an upgrade would help? here is my crash trace (where there are question marks i did not find out which debug packages to install.)
thank you again bas |

That problem is caused by either:
1) A failure of the system to be fully updated, please check your package manager 2) A failure of Solid, in that it cannot connect to HAL

That depends. Which version of KDE (couldn't see it mentioned)? If it's 4.4, it may be that Qt hasn't been updated as it should since 4.4 requires Qt 4.6.x.

KDE 4.4 shouldn't even be capable of starting without Qt 4.6, I would consider it a grave bug of any distro packages which didn't bump the dependency.

If you are using Qt 4.5.x then you are using KDE SC 4.3
This reminds me of https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=219333 The bug reappeared on Debian packages (it was supposed to be fixed in the 4.3.4-4 workspace package) It should be properly fixed on KDE SC 4.4.x. Regards |

sorry i forget to mention that i use kde 4.3.4
my system is fully updated as i don't really understand the workaround described in the bug report mentioned by Dario i think i will just wait for kde 4.4 being released in debian testing and post here then if it helps... thank you very much for your help! bas |
