I'd like to know how to change the opacity of the task bar (= panel). I've seen it's possible from some screen shot.

You need to use a plasma-theme that provides transparency. One example is http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Gl ... tent=81388

If you like your current theme but just wants a transparant panel, you need to use the "Desktop theme details" in system-settings (advanced tab) to change just that part of theme.
