I have strange issue with plasma on my Dell Latitude E5500. Sometimes when I login, even with new just created user, plasma just freezes.
Everything is loaded(like panels, widgets etc..) instead of tray elements. Only notification area and these widget, that are activated from system tray settings(like battery widget). The mouse is movе choping, I can't start anything, alt+f2 doesn work, any icon on panels or folder view, too... The only thing that I can do is moving to first shell(Ctrl+Alt+F1) and restarting kdm. Is there any way to get some error log or something, so I could file it as bug? Arch Linux x86_64 Kernel: 2.6.33 KDE 4.4.2 Qt 4.6.2 |

It could possibly be that a widget is recursively resizing itself, which can be possibly caused by the screen resolution being too low.
If you can, try tweaking your Xorg configuration to ensure that 1024x768 at least is achieved. If that doesn't work, try editing ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-desktoprc outside KDE. Find a line similar to this: [PlasmaViews][2][Sizes][Horizontal1280] then change the second number of min, max and size increasing it. Eg: size=1280,28 becomes size=1280,35

I'm with resolution 1400x900
My widgets are quite crowded(see the screenshot below), but if that was the issue, I'm not quite sure it would happening with clean user settings... ![]() However: I've made these changes in widgets size and waiting to see if this issue will come again. I assume that there is no possible way to get some error log or something about plasma if there is no crash? |

Plasma logs to stdout, which when you are start KDE from X is usually redirected to ~/.xsession-errors.

Still getting the same issue, without any errors, even warnings in .xsession-errors ...

Can you please run "kdebugdialog" and enable everything, then logout and back in again? Try to avoid using KDE applications once you have triggered the Plasma freeze. Once you have gotten it to freeze, you may wish to attach gdb to Plasma and generate a backtrace.

A few times today, the login process freezes at splash screen. Here what I've got from gdb -p $(pidof plasma-desktop)[This was executed from tty1]

Can you please try and reproduce under a new user?
If you cannot, try moving your Plasma configuration elsewhere, and list which 3rd party applets you use. The Plasma configuration is located at ~/.kde4/share/config/plasm*

Yep, sometimes it happen with a clean user.
Here is it my kde desktop: ![]() I'm using Gmail-plasmoid, Weather Forecast, Smooth tasks(was the same issue with the native task manager), pager, System tray with activated: battery, knetwork, device notifier in it, clock, trash, show desktop, two panels(the second one is with native application launcher and just app icons. Also as you can see: two folder view plasmoids. Arch Linux Linux 2.6.33.1 KDE 4.4.3 Qt 4.6.2 Enabled compositing Is ther some sure way to realize what exaclty freezes the logging in? It is really annoying issue. |

Only attaching a debugger once it has frozen would be able to reveal the issue.... did you customise anything from the default configuration under the new user before you experienced freezing?

Yep, I start the composite and activate most used plugins, trilinear texture filter, VSync and Smooth scaling But I can't attach the debuger, cuz it seems that there is not crash at all. It's just like something goes to infinite loop of something. |

Given you are using KDE 4.4.3, I would recommend filing a bug report in this case.
