Is it me, or is activity per desktop buggy?

I just installed 4.4 from Debian experimental, and love the new features. However, using different activities for each virtual desktop seems to be rather buggy.

- Wallpapers I set do not get restored after logging out and in again.
- When I connect an external monitor and set extended desktop I get duplicate activities that are not removed when I disconnect the monitor
- Worst of all: with 9 activities configured changing desktop becomes slow as molases
- When zooming out to manage the activities, the system becomes utterly slow and hardly allows me to navigate through the canvas and hit the delete button.

I have been searching on the forums but did not really see similar behaviour, so am wondering if it is just me.

BTW, I run this on a machine with 4 GB of ram, 2x2.8 Ghz, Intel graphics.

It might be a debian related issue, we tend to see people weird problems in debian experimental and debian squeeze because they are unstable.

On Kubuntu I have the same problem with the utterly slow system when zooming out to manage the activities.
I have this problem with KDE SC 4.3 and 4.4.

Well, it shouldn't be the hardware at least. Those specs sound like mine...and I have activity per desktop enabled as well - using 8 desktops. I don't notice much, if any, difference in speed depending on how many desktops I use.

I can think of two reasons:

1. Debian-related.
2. Dual-monitor related, especially the duplicated activities part but maybe the slowness as well (have only one monitor myself so can't check).

As far as the wallpapers not getting restored: do plasmoids get restored or is it just the wallpapers?

I assume you're zooming out and trying to delete the duplicated activities? Otherwise I must admit I fail to see why one would even want/need to zoom out when the activities are mapped to the virtual desktops (but I agree: the zooming part is painfully slow).

It is just the wallpapers that do not get restored.

Indeed, I zoom out just to delete the 4 activities that get created once I connect an external monitor.

I believe desktop switching (cube) gets slow with these extra 4 activities, but am not sure. Will test this. Wallpaper restore does not work even with only one monitor (and without having connected the external display).

I have this problem with KDE SC 4.3 and 4.4.

This is a known issue (due to a limitation in Qt as far as I know) and one of the reasons why the ZUI will go away in 4.5.

i also have an intel video card ( i950 )

i suggest another problem , video drivers. to me kwin is very fast with latest drivers ( 2.11.0 really made things faster ,but it was already very good with 2.10.0 )

about the zoom in speed , just try with --graphicssystem raster. you will not believe how fast it will be.

with the desktop per activity, sometimes its a pain to configure, but in my experience , once properly configured , its stable and it does work very well.
