solution: drag icon to the right

THANKS ALL!!

----------------------------------------

In the old version of KDE, it was very simple and easy to create a shortcut.

In the "new" version of KDE, I have scoured the internet for instructions for the procedure, searched this forum, and zero documentation comes up.

Hammering away at the interface for a while didnt work either,

Its true I was able to make a kde4 taskbar short cut once, but the chore is so un-intuitive and drawn out that I cant remember.

How does one do this in new KDE version ?

Unlock widgets -> drag and drop items (from your file manager, application launcher etc.) to the panel.

Alternatively you can use the QuickLaunch widget.

I'm sorry .. this must be some sort of joke, but I'm not laughing

All I want to do is make a firefox shortcut appear in the taskbar, so that when I click it, firefox opens. I dont want to have to hunt through the confusing menu every time.

The taskbar is unlocked, but when I click "F" and then drag the premade firefox button there, nothing happens.

Also, when I right click the taskbar there seems to be no way to add any application launchers.

I tried again, but have to give up.

Thanks anyway, cheers and thanks for trying!

the problem might be where you drag it to, you can't drag it onto the task manager or onto the system tray - you have to drag it to the area between 2 existing plasmoids/widgets. When the icon finds an acceptable spot a blank square solid area will be displayed indicating this is an acceptable landing spot and then release the left mouse button.

You can also use the kickoff menu, when right-clicking, you will have the option to add a shortcut

Well, when you drag the icon to a place where it can be placed the other items in the taskbar should move to indicate that. For example, if you have the startmenu on the far left with the pager next to it: if you drag the firefox icon between them the pager should be nudged to the right to make room for firefox. It's more difficult to see it if you try to drag it just to left of the task-manager if there are no open windows but the same principle apply. Another way is to hunt for it once, right-click on it and select "Add to panel". The icon should show up in the same panel (if you have several) that the start-menu is in.

There is if you have the quicklaunch widget in the taskbar. If it's there (usually not by default though) you can just right-click on it and select "Add launcher" (at least in 4.4.3 and later).

Besides, if you can't make the above work for some reason there is another way: hunt for firefox once, right-click on it and select "Add to favorites". It doesn't add it to the panel but it does make it unnecessary to hunt for it again. It's in the first list that pops up when you open the menu.
