This is not really a question about Konqueror, but I couldn't find any option to ask a question about KDE itself. So, I hope someone will advise me where to post questions about KDE itself rather than about an application.
My question is, what is the correct way to add a new icon (that I import or create) to the panel? I have installed Paint Shop Pro under wine and it works fine, but the installation failed to install an appropriate icon. So, I searched the 'net and found a suitable PSP icon and put it in /usr/share/icons. But when I added that icon to the main panel, it shows up with a white background rather than with a transparent background like all the other icons on the panel. So, I tried editing the icon and saving it as a '.gif' file and while it displays correctly in konqueror with a transparent background, it still appears with a white background on the main panel. What do I need to do to modify the image so that it will appear on the main panel with a transparent background? |

If you use the application launcher to locate the program and then right click on it, you should get an Add to panel option. In other words, you don't use Konqueror to achieve this.

Thanks for responding, John.
Yes, I did exactly as you suggested; however, the problem is that the icon is displaying with a white background instead of a transparent background. Sorry if I confused the issue by referring to konqueror. The only reason I mentioned konqueror is just because konqueror can be used to view stand-alone icons by just typing: konqueror iconname.png <E> and konqueror will display that icon to show if it is displaying correctly or not. Konqueror does display my icon correctly with a transparent background, but it does not display correctly (with a transparent background) on the main panel. |

You need to edit the image in question so that it is stored in the PNG format, and has a Alpha channel with no background.

Thanks. Now if I only knew how to make a png with an alpha channel I did make a .gif (which had no background, and I saved it as a .png, but that didn't work. |

I think you need something like Gimp or Krita to create and use alpha channels

I have created the icon as a transparent .png using alpha channel and the image correctly shows up with a transparent background in /usr/share/icons but it still shows up with a white background on the panel. I've uploaded a copy of the icon here: http://www.upquick.com/temp/psp.png |

I have no idea how to do what you want, just knew what you needed to do an alpha channel - sorry
how about starting a new thread "How to create a panel icon with transparent background" |

It takes some time until the new icon is shown in the panel as it is in some icon cache. Give the icon another name as the icon with the non-transparent background has, assign it to the launcher in the panel and after some relogins it should be there. Might help to run "kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental".
