shhhh -- quiet, plasma!

Wed Jul 21, 2010 12:30 am
I can't remember when it started, but it seems like a couple KDE versions ago or so, plasma got very noisy on my Kubuntu machines. What I mean is, every plasma app just spits out gobs and gobs of console messages which get logged to ~/.xsession-errors. It doesn't take long before my log file is several megabytes.

I'm not as worried about disk space as I am about the constant disk writes, the power usage on my laptop (powertop points fingers at plasma an awful lot), and most of all it just makes debugging anything else a real pain.

Is there some way I can quiet it down? Is it because I have -dbg packages installed, or do I just need to slip in a ">/dev/null" somewhere?

Can you please post an excerpt of this output?

I can confirm this observation. I just checked and my .xsession-errors is 6.3 MB in size! Much of it doesn't seem to be errors, but just logs (Program X doing this, Program Y doing that...) from various programs, including kwin, plasma, randr, rekonq etc. So, it's not just plasma.

This is interspersed with errors from nepomuk, dbus and QPainter and so on.

I'm using Archlinux and on 4.4.5. If it's needed (randr?), I'm using nvidia's retarded binary drivers.

As I mentioned, it's a huge file. I don't really know what you'd like to see, but I pastebin'd some random excerpts...: http://pastebin.ca/1905062

Please run "kdebugdialog" and deselect all areas.

Wow. That's awesome. I didn't know such a thing existed! Thanks!

Incidentally, wouldn't this be a performance overhead if the system was logging every small action made in these applications? If so, perhaps all debug output should be disabled by default?

Thanks for the response and the tip. I ran the debug dialog and disabled everything. Then I logged out, cleared my .xsession-errors file from a VT shell, and logged back in.

Login alone generated a 46k errors file, which I've gzipped and uploaded to my web server here: http://www.alandmoore.com/xsession-errors.gz

Not all of that is KDE, some of it is emacs daemon, but the vast majority is KDE noise.

Every time I click an icon, run something in Krunner, use a keyboard shortcut, run anything KDE-related, it logs a bunch of stuff. I mean, just hitting F12 to open Yakauke generates 4 lines of log every time. There's got to be a way to turn this off.

Yup, basically checking "disable all debug output" in kdebugdialog doesn't seem to have much/any effect. I'm seeing the same results here.

You need to file bugs in this case aganist kglobalaccel and kdeinit4.

Off hand, do you know what the appropriate product to file a bug against would be? Those two projects aren't specifically listed at bugs.kde.org, and it's changed to where you have to pick a product from a list now.

Thanks.

Those two products should be available... did you use search and not just check the list of common items? It also may be "kdeinit" instead of "kdeinit4"

The interface has changed recently. Now I can only choose from the list, there is no searching for a package/project. I'll just report it to kdelibs, since that seems to be where other kglobalaccel and kdeinit bugs have been reported.

Well, I found several other bugs reported on this general issue anyway; nobody seems sure what to report the bug against, though.

The one with the most activity seems to be this one:
