Yesterday I converted my windows vista to Ubuntu. Today, I downloaded full Kubuntu from Synaptic Package Manager. Then, I downloaded the plasma desktop from Ubuntu Software Center.
I have a lot of KDE applications available, but it seems like they're running in the Gnome desktop. How do I get my OS changed to Kubuntu and still be able to switch back and forth between gnome and KDE, and how do I set Plasma as my default desktop. |

To answer the question: Kubuntu and Ubuntu are the same OS underneath. Installing the Kubuntu packages in Ubuntu will install the KDE desktop and applications (but the Ubuntu applications will still be available).
Having those packages installed, you can pick which desktop to use from the login screen. There is usually a button labeled Sessions (or desktops, or something similar), which will provide you with a list of desktop sessions to choose from including Gnome (Ubuntu default) and KDE. Just select the session you want to use and log in and you will be presented with that desktop.

Thanks for your responses. I'm sorry about double posting. I'm new here and saw a more appropriate thread topic after my first post. Namely the KDE Plasma desktop subject.
I have an idea I'm going to try and see if it will solve the problem. One of the items I selected in the synaptic package manager was KDE minimal. I wonder if that is causing the program to not completely load. I have the KDE applications, but they are running on the Gnome desktop. The log in page does not give me a desktop option. When the computer starts it says Kubuntu, but the desktop looks identical to the Gnome desktop, other than having the KDE applications. Thanks. BTW. I'm not a programmer. I'm learning how to use Linux just because I like the open source idea. I'm planning on blogging and selling websites other home office and healthy living stuff. The Linux is the foundation of my little online free enterprise. |

You need to install kubuntu-desktop. That should get you everything you need.

Thank you all. I did install Kubuntu and after a slow start it's working just fine now. I'm happy and thankful to have finally made the change and look forward to learning and working with Kubuntu from now on.
I did hire Just One Geek to help me do this project. I would not have been able to do it without his help. Bob |
