Hello there! I installed KDE 4.5. When I play a video at full screen using vlc, the notifications do not appear. For example, when a message from kopete is arrived I can only hear its sound, not see the notification on the down right. Any help?
Well good job Einstein, why don't we build a rocket in the meantime...

Did you look in the preferences of VLC
=> If I can remember it right, there is some option available for that (how full-screen has to work)... But I can't check it at the moment, so maybe I'm completely wrong

Thanks for answering. I didn't find the option you are talking about. I should mention that with KDE 4.4.x the notifications could be seen when vlc played fullscreen. I didn't change anything, I just installed KDE SC 4.5....

Did you check the following option in VLC:
Open VLC >> [Ctrl]+[P] (Preferences) >> Video >> ~ Always above (I have a Dutch installation) => if so, uncheck..... but if it isn't checked, we have to look further into this....

ehm...
=> I would think that isn't normal behaviour (I wouldn't want to get notifications when looking at a movie - but then I would check that Always Above option.... ) So, if someone with more expertise can confirm this...... PS I checked it here (don't use an e-mailclient) => start copying a large file, and then put VLC to fullscreen (playing a video): I get 2 times a VERY short notification (starting copy, end of copying) => visible for +/- 1/20 of a second.... => VLC 1.1.2, KDE 4.5.00

I think a dev should reply to this, it's a serious issue.

I would guess that the intended behaviour is for the notifications not to be shown or heard when watching something full screen.

Why is that? Doesn't everybody wanna know what's goin' on when they're watching a movie? Isn't that related with the bug that I cannot see or set my widgets on my screensaver? Please people do something! At least with the widgets on the screensaver!

KDE in this case is likely "fighting" with VLC. This is probably why you catch a glimpse of it before it is hidden again.
In most cases, where applications have full screen focus, the only sure fire way for KDE to display it's notifications is to take focus and show the notification. This triggers a bug in Flash Player by Adobe, which causes it to exit Full Screen. In addition, it is inconvenient when giving a Presentation for notifications to be shown. As such, KDE likely just shows it, with a policy of always on top, but the full screen application overlays it.

Thanks for replying. Shouldn't an option be created in 'System Settings -> Application and System Notifications' called for example 'Show notifications when fullscreen' and we will be able to mark it and unmark it depending on what we desire? I (for example) need to be able to see what's going on on kopete while I'm watching a video so that if someone sends me a message I'll know if it is important so that I respond to it then or after the video ends. Also, what about the screen saver plasmoids bug I'm referred to here : viewtopic.php?f=67&t=89827 ? Is it related to this or not? How many people have this bug?

In this case you need to make a feature request at bugs.kde.org.
