No Plasma after update to 4.5.1  Topic is solved

Wed Sep 01, 2010 6:28 pm
Today i updated to KDE 4.5.1. After the reboot plasma does not work anymore:
After login still my logon screen is shown. But all my autostart programs are running, with KRunner or Yakuake I can start every programm - everything is working, besides plasma. When I start it manually i get:

Code: Select all
$ plasma-desktop
<unknown program name>(2224)/ kdemain: !!{} STARTUP TIME 72889496 START (line: 48 )
plasma-desktop(2224): Communication problem with  "plasma-desktop" , it probably crashed.
Error message was:  "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply" : " "Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." "

Edit: Okay, it was caused by a broken widget, the myspace widget. After i removed it in the config files, plasma starts again.

These things happen just to give us the Willies.
Fortunately they are never that serious :)

Please try running the following commands:

Code: Select all
rm /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER/plasma*
kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental
plasma-desktop &

Does Plasma start?

If it doesn't, try this afterwards:
Code: Select all
killall -9 plasma-desktop
mkdir -p ~/plasma-conf-backup/
mv $(kde4-config --localprefix)/share/config/plasm* ~/plasma-conf-backup/
plasma-desktop &
