When I try to "add widgets" and then "get more widgets", I can install them from the internet without issue. They say they are installed but then they are nowhere to be found! Is there some sort of overall control point for which (and where) widgets are installed?

did they ever work correctly? did you just do an upgrade? you are running kde 4.n.n ? can you create a new user and see if that user has the same issues |

I have the same problem in 4.5.x, and manually installing *.plasmoid files doesn't work either. However, there's a workaround:
1. Download the scripted plasmoid. 2. Unpack the file with e.g. ark. 3. Run the following command
where foo is the name of the unpacked directory/folder (and not the .plasmoid file). EDIT: Here's a bug report: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=249980
