Screen Edges - custom command possible?

Hi all,

Long time reader, first time poster.

When I go to System Settings -> Desktop -> Screen Edges I can configure the corners and edges to perform actions when I go there - this is very useful!

However, the list of things that Plasma can do is limited to 10 options, basically variations on 4 commands.

My question is: can I add my own command to this list?

Specifically, I have my task panel auto hide, and I'd love to be able to start the "Kickoff Application Launcher" by going to the bottom left corner rather than having to click on the popped-up button. I know I can bring it up using Alt-F1, but I'd like a mouse shortcut too.

TIA,

Not that I know.

There is an idea about it here: brainstorm.php?mode=idea&i=39328

You can to replace Kickoff with Lancelot. The latter has an option to show the menu on hover after a certain amount of time. Other than the small delay, it's pretty much what you ask for (except that it's Lancelot instead of Kickoff).

Hi Hans,

Thanks for that, I'll give Lancelot a go.

However, my main reason for wanting this was not so much the act of clicking, but more from a "Fitt's law" point of view, where corners are an "infinitely large target" - I can always easily get into any corner without worrying about accuracy.

Right now I have to go to the bottom and wait for the panel to appear, then move to the K-icon and click it. Not terrible, but it's certainly easier to just push down and left as hard as I can on the mouse! Even with Lancelot, the mouse accuracy is fundamental.

Thanks again,

Ah, isn't the menu icon in the left corner already? If not, why not move it there?

I have a tiny panel with Kickoff in my bottom left corner which is set to autohide. To open the menu I just move the mouse into the corner and click - no need to position my mouse.

You do make a good point... although I've found the auto-hide a little flaky sometimes with some fullscreen apps.

I'll do that for now, but it would still be nice to be able to program the corners to do anything.

Thanks again!

I would suggest that you add an idea to Brainstorm for that. Note that you have to describe how it would work - "anything" is too vague.

For example, letting it run custom scripts would give you a lot of power, but how would you do to open Kickoff in that case? (I know some ways, but they are not very obvious).
Or maybe you want to assign a screen edge to a keyboard shortcut, for example the top left corner to Alt + F1, the bottom left is Ctrl + V etc.

These are two separate ideas to achieve what you want, and then there's the idea I linked to earlier.
