Have you tried deleting your cache? Try deleting the contents of the .kde/cache- (or .kde4/cache) and the .kde/tmp- (or .kde4/tmp-) directories.

Hi, i have exactly same problem here, but deleting tmp and cache directories in ~/.kde4/ didn't helped.
And yes, i deleted directories it was pointing to, not only symlinks

Did you quit plasma-desktop first? If not, you can try that with the command
(Run plasma-desktop to start Plasma Desktop again.)

I have this "ghost window" too. For me it appears in the top left, I thought it was some resizing artefact, or some such. It comes and goes with no apparent reason behind it.
Notice that the border at either side has a discontinuity - I get the same sort of discontinuity in the shutdown dialog. |

Can you try turning off all the Effects then enabling Desktop Effects itself? Then try incrementally enabling Effects until it re-appears and post back here.

When I turn off desktop effects the square disappear. When I then again turn on desktop effects and leave other settings as they are, the square doesn't reappear. In addition when I move the taskbar to the left the square also disappear.
