Replacing Screen Brightness shortcuts

Wed Dec 29, 2010 10:27 am
Hi @ All,

First of all:

does anyone know how I could replace the original command for increasing and decreasing the screen brightness on my netbook running KDE 4.5.1 ???

I have found a script, which could set the brightness on my intel gma3150 by invoking
Code: Select all
setpci -s 00:02.0 f4.b=ff

this one should be used when pressing the Fn+ArrowUp key instead of the (not working) default command.

I know that i could make my own shortcuts, but I don't want to loose hte fancy little OSD that appears. xD :'(

And the second thing is, that my screen remains dark when I open my laptop (and it's running)
Any suggestions ?

Go to
System Settings -> Shortcuts and gestures -> Custom Shortcuts

And create new actions there
Right-click the list on the left -> New -> Global Shortcut -> Command/URL

Set the trigger and the command. That's it.

I already did that but then the the OSD doesn't appear ... it's not really important but I like the KDE brightness OSD :D

I thought it there's a way to do it with a config file or something like that ...

another thing :

why does the shortcut manager only accept UPPERCASE letters ???

when I press Ctrl + (lowercase) a it defines the shortcut with
Ctrl+(uppercase) A

so could only use a shortcut by having Capslock activated ???

:::::Edit:::::
by the way thanks for your reply

You will find these shortcuts in the global shortcut editor in System Settings. They're associated wih the "KDE daemon", or kded, application.

@einar
It is for changing the shortcuts, not the commands they invoke.

@Alphadog
It is shown as Ctrl+A but that doesn't mean you need the capital A. It doesn't matter whether Caps-Lock is on or off.

Explanation for this is that those are keystrokes - you don't have 'a' key on a keyboard - you have 'A' key. If you want, you can create a Ctrl+Shift+A shortcut.

but if i press Ctrl + a without having capslock activated nothing happens *head => Desk*

now when I activate Capslock it works :D

is there any configfile where I could define which command the KDEdaemon should run when it gets the command "brightness up"
??
