Not 100% well...
I always use two monitors and the larger of the 2 now isn't active.
On start up it was active during kubuntu 10.10 splash (blue screen), but then turned black.

What happened? :o

Finally I changed it all back (removed the driver). So now I have my 2 monitors again at least, but Kubuntu is unworkable.
In a few days or a week maybe I will have read enough about SSH to understand how it works, but what do I do from there?
How would I know which process is causing the trouble?

Re: kubuntu keeps freezing  Topic is solved

You should really renew proprietary driver from nvidia. To enable more monitors you should go to "Nvidia X Server Settings" application and do some configuration work. Just do the command: nvidia-settings (you must have proprietary nvidia drivers installed and enabled to run that)

ok, I installed once more the "version current - recommended" and then ran nvidia-settings.
"Some" configuration is quite an understatement, at least if one doesn't know exactly what what is (Xinerama, for one) :-\ but yes, I managed to get both monitors working :)
Is there a command I can use to check now if indeed I'm using the right driver and have the settings put correctly?

Meanwhile this looks solved; I'll mark it accordingly once I've logged into Kubuntu successfully.
EDIT: over half an hour with no freeze and lots of apps working simultaneously - all looks good :)
In "desktop effects" I see:
Desktop effects are not available on this system due to the following technical issues:
Required X extensions (XComposite and XDamage) are not available.

I don't care much about eye candy so it's no big deal.
Thanks again for all suggestions - I'm glad it's sorted out 8)

My congratulations :) You can see your driver version at "X Server Information" section of "Nvidia X Server Settings". Also the "nvidia-settings" wouldn't work without enabled nvidia driver. So I think your configuration is pretty good :)

BTW you can enable XComposite/XDamage. Here's original OpenSUSE thread:
http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/applications/407693-how-enable-compositing-support-kde4-2-a.html
In two words:
Code: Select all
sudo kate /etc/X11/xorg.conf

kate is default KDE text editor, you can use gedit, vim, nano, emacs or whatever you like. And the paste this to the end of file:
Code: Select all
Section "Extensions"
    Option         "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

And then you need to reboot your system (at least X.org)

Also you might find some useful info here: http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/X.Org/Transparency. But beware - it is gentoo wiki ("emerge" for gentoo is like "apt-get" for ubuntu or "yast" for SUSE in two words).

I pasted the code, but after logging out/in
Code: Select all
xdpyinfo | grep Composite
(which I cut from the 2nd url you suggested) didn't show any output.

Desktop effects are still disabled with the same message.

I thing that logging in/out does not restart X server (But it is only my suggestion). Try rebooting or manual X server restart instead.
Code: Select all
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
or
Code: Select all
sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart

I shut down the computer and started it again.
I still have the same message in Desktop Effects.

Sorry than, can't tell you anything more. Probably these components should be additionally installed. Hope you'll find an answer :)

Re: kubuntu keeps freezing

Tue Jan 25, 2011 8:33 pm
Some afterthoughts... ever since I changed nvidia-settings, I noticed that:
pro
- Kubuntu works, albeit slow
- Kubuntu works with 2 monitors
con
- Ubuntu is much, much slower
- redshift is gone (adapting bright white color like f.lux but for Linux)
http://jonls.dk/redshift/comment-page-1/#comment-40

I noticed some comment when trying to get redshift to work again in terminal, saying "RANDR missing"
Maybe that also has to do with the nvidia-settings?

My pc's memory is not the most optimal (1.25GB I think)
Just wondering if that's too light and maybe I should change back to the old settings and forget about Kubuntu ( :'( for now)

Comments welcome...

The proprietary NVidia driver does not support randr.

additional info:
- is this a new install or an upgrade ?
- did this pc run fine before 12.10 ?
- did it run fine before Skype and Jupiter?
- when it freezes can you alt+ctrl+F1 to a virtual terminal?
- what is command uname -a

this looks helpful http://richxiong89.wordpress.com/2012/1 ... 04-64-bit/

Hello, i have opened Kinfo to see some information, the results as follows:

OS version: Linux 3.5.0-27-generic
KDE SC Version: 4.10.2

--Mi lapto also have 6Gb of RAM

Using the command uname -r:

3.5.0-27-generic

The OS has been installed (fresh install), but the KDE desktop has been upgraded after the OS install
On 12.10, the freezes were present, but less frequent
This PC ran before Skype an Jupiter, but the freezes were present as in the preview sentence
When the system freezes, i can't use the keyboard, so, y can't use ctlr+Alt_F1

Using the command uname -a:

Linux gtronick-Latitude-E5420 3.5.0-27-generic #46-Ubuntu SMP Mon Mar 25 19:58:17 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

However, i have been using the pc for aprox, four hours today and is ok. I have deactivated the Wallpaper slide show, and is working fine. But, however, i don't remember the update i have done to the KDE. Days ago, i was searching some information in google about KDE, when i found an actualization for KDE, is a beta:

https://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa/+archive/beta
http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-sc-4.9.90

I do not remember, but i think i added the follow commands:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/beta/ubuntu quantal main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/beta/ubuntu quantal main
and the i have used muon pakage manager to update, i wan to have all my pc up to date. ;)

The desktop appearance changed in some things, now, are more Desktop themes and wallpapers, the login session splash screen has changed, and some others effects are not shown, for example, before this, when i started a program the program's icon bounced next to the cursor. Now it does not happens. Before, when i push the power button of the laptop, the leave option were:

Shutdown/sleep, restart and lock, but now, the restart option is no more. To restart, i must type sudo reboot in Konsole.

The general system speed has been improved.

Well, the system did not freeze when i was typing this reply, that is something. ;D

However, i want to see the link you mentioned before and read about. Thanks for your help, it has been too useful. If my laptop does not freezes in the next three days, i hope the Wallpapers slideshow is the freezes reason in my case. However, every other information could be useful. Thanks a lot!

Question: if i have kernel 3.5, i could install kernel 3.7?
Should i remove the kernel 3.4 header files?
