Terminal prompt over wallpaper

Tue Feb 15, 2011 9:30 am
Is there a way to configure desktop plasma to display console just over the wallpaper?

Something like this:

Important: this should work with desktop effects disabled.

Have you tried plasmacon?

Not exactly what I look for. At first, it has borders and non-transparent background.

What I'm looking for, would be better implemented in a form of Activity type (not sure how it's called in the English localisation; It's where you can choose "Color/ Image / Slideshow / Virus / etc.")

I haven't seen anything like that - a wallpaper plugin that puts a transparent konsole overtop of the background of your choice.

You can try requesting it in the Brainstorm forum and I think it will be received well (I would definitely like to see something like that as well); however such a thing would probably not be implemented as a part of core KDE, but as a 3rd-party plugin.

It would almost certainly still need to be a widget, just one where you could turn the background off (it is possible to set up a plasmoid to do this)

This is good, but can't see <Get more...> button near the Wallpapaer plugins selector. I mean, I can install custom wallpapers, styles, colors, widgets, plasma themes, etc, but is it possible to create custom wallpaper plugins, that can be easily installed by other users?

Do you want it to cover your whole desktop? In that case it sounds like you want a containment (called Layout in the GUI in 4.6). Similar to Folder View, it could be a widget (basically a terminal on your desktop) or containment (the whole desktop is your terminal).

Unfortunately I don't think anyone has written anything like this yet, and I don't know if it's possible with the Konsole KPart. As airdrik suggested you can try to create an idea in Brainstorm about it.

A possible workaround for now:
  • Find a terminal that has the features you want and supports fake transparency (i.e. it will be transparent without composite).
  • Hide menu bar, tool bar, scroll bar, borders etc. I used Eterm in the past (screenshot).
  • You can either use kstart to specify its window settings, or you can create a custom window rule for it. You basically want to specify:
    • Keep Below Others
    • All Desktops
    • Maximize or a specific size
    • No Border
Hm, I guess that's it.
