Kubuntu10.10
Platform Version 4.6.0(KDE 4.6.0) Version: 0.97-29ubuntu60 Description: GRand Unified Bootloader (Legacy version) desktop computer AMD 9600 Quad Core 2300mhz 64 bit GPU PNY 9600 nVidia GeForce 500mb ddr2 SDRAM 4gb Axiom EEC DDR2 SDRAM 6700mhz HDD Maxtor internal SATA 500gb Optical Drive internal SATA DVDRW 16X Kmail 1.13.5 I have been working for a couple of days getting two monitors functioning properly on the same PC. When I believe finished, I noticed that the Desktop Effects (All Effects tab) are missing. Needless to say, all those wonderful features no longer work. My computer froze and would not allow me back in. I do not have the skill to resolve my problems with a command line unless I also have help from others. Only online do I get that help, from kind people like you. I apopogize for wasting the time of you who were trying to help. I finally had to reinstall the OS. When I reinstalled, I did not install both monitors as before. When I did that, 'Desktop Effects' returned. THanks again. All Desktop Effects disappeared when the second monitor was added to the system. The dual-monitor system is set up so that each monitor is intependent of the other. As the mouse passes from one screen to the other so do the keyboard functions. Each monitor has it's own panel and plazmoids. Everything functions as it is supposed to, I believe, but after the last step of making the dual-monitors work, I lost all Desktop Effects. I would like them restored, if possible. Some are just aesthetically pleasing, however a few have work saving function that I want back. Thanks in advance for any help. I am pretty much a newbie.

Please ensure that Direct Rendering is available. Some graphics cards do not support providing Direct Rendering when powering two or more screens (or alternately, a certain amount of screen space exceeded by having two screens). In this case, likely a driver limitation.

I may have spoken in error. It was my understanding that OpenGL function was Direct Rendering. I am not with that much computer savvy and may have talked out of turn. In any event my mind troubled me a bit and I researched my video card. In the specifications there was no mention of direct rendering, so I am not sure about that. Nonetheless, after hitting a wall yesterday and a black screen I was unable to fix, I finally got a live CD to be accepted and re-installed the system while I had the ability. I am just about finished getting things working properly again, and have the selfsame problem with Desktop Effects. The minute I was able to get the two monitors configured to work properly, the contents of the folder that contained all the special effects disappeared. Again I am without the neat little 'Desktop' candy, among which were a couple of features I used all the time. In any event. I prefer having the two monitors over the desktop effects, so I guess I will have to settle for that. Before the dual-monitors, though, desktop effects worked wonderfully. It looks like I can have one or the other and not both Desktop Effects and/or Dual-Monitors. Thanks again for the help. If it is a Direct Rendering Problem, I hope this will be useful information for others.

Wait, is only the "All Effects" tab gone? I've never heard of this before. Do you still have the "General" tab in Desktop Effects? What is the compositing state?
Also, could you tell us more about how you get dual screens? Do you use TwinView?

Sorry for my recklessness, the "All Effects" tab is not missing, the contents of the tab are. And yes I do have the "General Tab". It says that "Desktop Effects are temporarly disabled. When I click on the 'activate' selection, a green check precedes the comment that Desktop Effects have resumed. When I test the effects, ie. moving a window to see if 'Wobbly Windows' work. When I return to system settings, Desktop Effects again show as temporarly disabled. Opening the "All Effects" tab shows an empty folder, no contents at all.
Before I continue, I apologize to all who would have me make a separate post of the "Twin-Monitor" problem, nonetheless, I am relatively certain that it is an extension of the missing content of the "All Effects" tab. Prior to responding to your reply, I attempted the TwinView choice and restarted the computer as instructed by the Configure Display Daemon. My choice had been 'Separate X screen'. When the screen returned, things appeared the same. When rechecking my new choice of TwinScreen, it had moved back to the selection 'Separate X Screen'. Things remain the same. Upon entering the command: sudo nvidia-settings, the konsole is filled with ERRORs. The first line is as follows, Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display " :0.0". Then there are 36 'Unable to assign attribute.....' ERROR: entries. Here is the command response to "sudo nvidia-settings":steven@Yeshua:~$ sudo nvidia-settings [sudo] password for steven: Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0". My lack of experience shows, in that, it is obvious that I have two (mostly working) displays. The dual-screens work, however, occasionally an application activated on one screen will open on the other, not always though. Ultimately I will want to fix both problems, however, should they be posted separately? If you have a solution and it involves editing, could you please include the required information and just how I make the entries. My guess is that I will edit in # and mistakes can prove a bit unforgiving. Thanks for your patience; it is most appreciated. Unable to repair my frozen computer using a konsole only, I reinstalled with only one monitor. Desktop Effects returned. Thanks for trying to help. Sorry for any abuse of your time. |
