Calc widget almost useless

Fri Apr 08, 2011 1:04 pm
Perhaps I'm overlooking something, but the Calculator widget seems almost useless. It's annoying that I can't type in numbers -- I have to use the mouse. But what's worse is that the window for displaying numbers is very short and there doesn't seem to be any way to enlarge it, or even to scroll across it to see the entire window. Plus, there's no way to backspace over a single digit. If there's a way to configure this widget to deal with these problems, I haven't found it.

This thing doesn't even deserve to be in the standard widget list.

On my trunk system I could type in numbers and other details (such as +, *, =, etc) without problem. I did have to click on the widget first (even on a non-button area, the display worked best) for it to start working however, but this is expected behaviour I believe.

I can type just fine in 4.6.2 as well. But if you want to type you are probably better off using the kalgebra or qalculate widgets, which are purely keyboard-based.

Entering numbers etc. works fine for me as well, and you can resize the widget like other widgets. However, backspace doesn't work - you might want to file a wish for that at http://bugs.kde.org (if it doesn't already exist).

Still can't type numbers

Wed Apr 20, 2011 12:11 am
I've been able to resize the calculator, now that I know it's possible. In my earlier attempts to drag the border I didn't find the sweet spot for moving it, so it seemed unresponsive. But I still can't type numbers. I've clicked in various places on the calc to see if they would activate the typing, but so far nothing has worked. I wonder what I might be missing, or for that matter how it's possible to type numbers when the calc is active without them showing up!

Version

I'm running KDE 4.6.2. Switching users makes no difference -- the keyboard still does nothing in the calculator.

I wonder if 4.6.2 just isn't a very good release. I've had another unrelated problem with it: kdehelp is missing its search box. Earlier and later versions of kdehelp don't have that problem.

With regards to the KDE Help Center, that functionality was deliberately removed as it was very old, and tended to generate invalid results.
