Hi all,
I'm using KDE 4.6.2 on Kubuntu. When switching my desktop to grid layout, I don't get a grid when adding/moving widgets and instead I can put them anywhere just like in the regular desktop layout (in fact I think I'm still with the regular desktop layout despite my selection). This works correctly with a new user account, so I think there's some cruft in my kde configuration (which dates back from 4.2 days). I tried deleting .kde/share/config/*plasma* files[1], but no luck. Is there any other file which I could edit/delete? I don't want to nuke the whole .kde/share/config directory... Thanks for any insight you may have. [1] - Which are the files plasma-appletsrc, plasma-desktop-appletsrc, plasma-desktoprc, plasmarc and plasma-windowed-appletsrc |

Was Plasma closed when you deleted the configuration files? Also, try running "kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental"

I'm pretty sure I logged out and worked from the console when I tried removing the files. Just to be sure, I removed them again and this time it worked! Weird, I must be getting crazy.
Thanks! |

My problem is already solved. I don't know why or how, but it is. ![]() Thanks for your help, though! |

It seems I declared victory too early.
![]() Today I logged in with a second monitor attached, and Plasma was completely broken, in several ways. For instance, all my desktop widgets were forgotten. The wallpaper which was supposed to be in the LVDS monitor was in the second monitor instead (the LVDS monitor was supposed to be the primary output). Changing the desktop image in the second monitor in one activity also changed it in the LVDS monitor in another activity. And other weird bugs which I don't remember right now. Things were bad. I logged out and then logged in again and my widgets were back (though in the second monitor isntead of the LVDS one as I would expect), but visually broken, they rendered in a weird way. Also, a new activity was created out of nowhere, with the name of one of my existing activities. After deleting the widgets and the new activity, things seemed to be normal. On the third login, the second monitor desktop had the same problem of the LVDS monitor: it said it had a grid desktop, but in practice it didn't work. In this case, switching back to a regular desktop and then to a grid desktop again solved the problem. I tried the same trick on the LVDS desktop and it didn't work, though. Now I'm back to the original problem: the LVDS monitor has the normal Desktop layout. I tried changing it to the Grid Desktop layout and I get exactly the problem I described in the first post in this thread: plasma says it's using the Grid Layout desktop but in practice what I get is the normal Desktop layout. But this time with a bug which I don't remember if I had the first time around: if I hover over a widget, it doesn't show the handle bar at the side. If I want to move, configure or remove the widget I have to click directly on it... I tried running "kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental" then logging out and in again but it didn't work. Finally, it is evident that plasma is being influenced by something else besides the configuration files I mentioned in the first post. Any idea what would that be? I really don't want to remove the whole .kde/share/config directory... And even then, it might still have the bug. |

Are you certain that your xrandr configuration is the same on each login? It could be possible that slightly different layouts cause Plasma issues.

I think it's the same. I don't handle the xrandr configuration directly, it's KDE who does the detection and configuration (and I tune it with the "Display Settings" dialog). I use the same procedure everytime I use my second monitor, so there's no reason for the xrandr configuration to be different. But I indeed determined that the problem is related to using a second monitor. When using only one, the grid layout works as it should (even on my main user account). It's only when I use the second monitor (I log in with the second monitor already plugged in) that the grid layout doesn't work correctly. I'll see if there's a bugzilla for this already, if not I'll open one. Ps: sorry for the long delays in my replies. This problem happens in my work laptop so it's not always that I can mess around to test different things. |
