I hate having to scroll down through my favourites or applications and if I drag the corner of the menu to make it fit the screen height, I don't have to scroll at all.
Trouble is, next time I login the menu has shrunk to it's previous size. How can I change the size and make it persistent? |

You are not experiencing standard behaviour. Which distro are you using?

At the moment, kubuntu Natty but I also have openSUSE installed and it does the same.
It DOES resize to an extent though. Example: If the default size is 4 inches, I resize to fill the screen, around 12 inches, after a reboot it will be 8 inches. Wierd. <EDIT> Something I just noticed. At the size it has set itself, I don't actually have to scroll anything. It seems it is shrinking to the size it needs to not scroll. |

Not a solution as I don't use the menu, but have you tried lancelot? I prefer the three column layout and it sticks to whatever size you want it to be.
But stick around and I'm sure somebody will have the right answer for you.

I have tried lancelot in the past and didn't get along with it.
It often crashed or artifact with desktop FX enabled. I'm sure it's improved since then though but my "thing" these days is I want to be able to get my desktop fully setup without having to install anything and kickoff is generally decent. I think it harks back from my gnome days when I had to add several PPS's and install things just to get a desktop that worked how I wanted (the main reason I switched to KDE). |

Try to restart plasma-desktop and see if it saves the size:

Nice try but no
Seems it is designed to go no bigger than it needs to be, which does make sense I suppose. I did try using window settings to set it to a certain size but it just detects the window properties as plasma desktop rather than an individual window so doesn't help. One of those things that isn't really a big deal but now I have decided I want it to fit the screen it will annoy me forever |

There simply must be a file for this! Isn't there something one can put in ~/.kde4/share/config/kickoffrc?

I have tried looking at a few other config files to see how they handle window size (system-settingsrc, for example) and copied those into kickoffrc and fiddled with different sizes but nothing made any difference.
I suppose those values simply won't work as kickoff does clearly do "dynamic" resizing to an extent. But I am going to keep trying different things (short of re-compiling, I'm not going that far ) |

I just tried it and it worked as expected for me (size remembered). Which version of Plasma Desktop do you use? Running 4.6.2 here.

4.6.2 here too.
When you say it remembered the size for you, was that after a reboot/logout? Also did you just resize it a little bigger or full height of screen? Also, do you have KDE set to restore the session or start with an empty session? (I start with empty session). I have done some fiddling with the WIDTH of the menu and that is sticking, just not the height. |

Almost full height, then I ran the kquitapp plasma-desktop and plasma-desktop commands.
