Renaming Plasma-Netbook activities.

Sun Jun 05, 2011 4:33 pm
I'm on openSUSE 11.4 with kde 4.6.3 (i think...) and I can't find anywhere an option to rename the activities I use.

If it's the same as Plasma Desktop, you go to the activity manager (e.g. right click on desktop -> Activities...) and click on the configure icon (bottom right) of the activity you want to rename.

It's actually not the same. Activities can be only added as "pages" and the only way to browse them is by the activity bar widget. There is no list of activities like there is in the plasma-desktop.

As far as I could tell, it used to be possible... but last time I used that it was before the addition of the session stuff and the new activity manager.

I remember when I was on kde 4.6.0 I could edit a file inside ~/.kde4/share/config or somewhere inside /usr/share but I have trouble locating that file in kde 4.6.3. I can't remember which file was it...

It should be inside ~/.kde4/share/config, possibly activitymanagerrc and plasma-desktop-appletsrc.

Sorry for becoming a pain, but I failed to find any entries, in those files, having to do with activity names...

That's how my panel looks at the moment and I really want those widgets to become as compact as they can get. Those two arrows on the activity bar are getting on my nerves and I thought that if I rename my activities in something really short I would be ok. I would also love to limit the Current Application Control widget's width but I don't want to bother you with that. I bet some google searching can help me.

In my activitymanagerrc I have
Code: Select all
4c6ba66c-b79c-4403-b906-e69116f1c438=Study
77383d22-ada7-454c-bf3b-1998ba3f0511=Main
8ac21231-49e8-4279-b323-2f9472d7e6ec=Weather
ffaaee43-1869-4c80-bd92-a2adc46a5583=Temporary

etc., so I thought the activity names might be stored there.

I have never used Plasma Netbook, but if I were you I would do the following to make the panel more useful:
1. Why Current Application Control widget and a taskbar widget? I would get rid of one of those. If you want the window buttons (close etc.) in your panel, there are plenty of widgets on http://www.kde-look.org such as http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/KW ... ent=122092
2. Can't you put the activity bar in an autohidden panel?
3. Do you need the Application Launcher (that's what I'm assuming what the KDE icon is for) and shutdown icon? You can use Search and Launch or KRunner (Alt + F2) to launch applications, and Ctrl + Alt + Delete or KRunner to shutdown etc.

EDIT: And asking honest questions is not the same as "becoming a pain", most of the people here are glad to help, and if they aren't they simply won't answer.

Researching on your own first is always nice, but don't hesitate to ask here. :)

That widget was pure gold. I have no idea how I managed to not stumble once upon it all this time, because I have been looking around for something similar for quite a while. It actually solves all my problems :)

Thank you very much Hans. You have been extremely helpful. I followed most of your last post's tips and I ended with a much more compact and convenient workspace.

In the case of plasma-netbook, the page names are stored elsewhere, in ~/.kde/share/config/plasma-netbook-appletsrc

Thus you can switch from plasma-desktop to plasma-netbook and back and have different activities in each.

Unfortunately, it is not clear if manually changing the entries in that file change anything. Test that on a newly created page, and see the bug report, tell if you succeed:
