i have been without text on my desktop icons. anybody know how to get them back? im using latest KDE on Arch install.
all i see is the icons themselves, and there is no text below them, this includes all icons, either newly created, or old. |

Can you reproduce with a new user?
What happens if you select an icon and press F2?

not sure about creating a new user yet, it worked initially for about a day or two. not sure what i did.
ok, i have icons on single click, so i cant figure how to f2 them. but when i hover the mouse over them, i DO see the text. WOW, thats a first, i thought they were nameless, lol. |

You can select icons by drawing a rectangle around them (not clicking on them), clicking on the (+) button when you hover over an icon or hold down Ctrl and click on an icon.
Can you post a screenshot please? Could the problem be because you have e.g. white text over a white background? Instead of creating a new user, you can also try to create a new activity and see if you have the same problem. Do you need instructions for how to do that?

thanks for the support,
a square wont draw (when i hold left click), its not a color background problem my background is multi color, thats the first thing i tried ![]() im using the oxygen theme, it happens on any theme. when i hover and click +, both on numpad, and keyboard it does nothing, its just busy displaying the hover (a popup window comes up, with another image of the icon, with the text below it) when i hit ctrl click, it does the same thing, it opens the object. this happend with both widgets locked, or unlocked on most of these things that i have tried. i can try to post a screen tomorrow if needed, just checking in before i go to bed. if you were to see a screen shot, you would see an oxygen themed plasma KDE desktop, with 2 blue folder icons on the desktop, with no writing under them, and a trash bin, with no writing under it, a kde bar at the top, and system resources widget, and the background which is multicolored. maybe ill try the new activity, yes, can you give me a very brief description of new activity, such as where i can find the button to open it, ill prob figure it out right away. thanks. |

The easiest way is to click on the desktop Tool Box (usually upper-right corner) -> Activities.... This opens up the activity manager. Click on Unlock Widgets if they are locked, then Create Activity -> Templates -> Folder View.

well, with a new activity, i can see the icon text, plain as day. thats cool. what just happened. is that basically opening another system copy of the DE? and i would guess that i would switch to that activity and delete the current one, in effect restoring the settings to default?
or will that help trace what i did? i was wondering if it was in the desktop settings and enhancements, you know all that garb with cube desktop, fading, etc.. if one of those borked up the text? i do have it on cube animation, fade, etc., plus windows shaping during drag, all that jazz. |

ahh, when im on the 2nd activity with template folder view i just tried something. i hit f2, and YES the rename comes up. if i highlight any icon, its always the first icon that tries to rename, this single click might have to go. but either way, my point is i wasnt seeing that behavior on the other desktop, f2 did nothing on the 1st if you see messages above. so maybe this offers a clue? would be nice to figure out if theres a setting i messed up. wonder if it resides on a .conf file.

in fact, this is cool, i would say problem solved. i created a new activity, all my presets are still intact on my main two programs that i use. i added my 2 icons back, (root and my user) for dolphin, and the trash can, the digital clock, and im good. im considering deleting the old activity. this is cool. thanks.

I don't know what happened to your first desktop. Currently adding an activity is pretty much like adding a second desktop, it doesn't affect your applications settings. If it works you can just delete your old activity, yes.
