It works for me if I use the standard Kickoff application launcher and it doesn't when I use Lancelot.
What are you doing different to the little video that it doesn't work?

standard kickoff application launcher = quicklaunch?
well it works like in the guide http://userbase.kde.org/images.userbase/5/5a/Plasma_howto-icon-quicklaunch-45.gif if i switch workspace type to "desktop", but with "netbook" it doesn't. i can not drag icons to the panel. with quicklaunch icons are on bottom of the page and not in the panel. |

Bizarre. I've got a number of different activities incl. the netbook one and it worked for me. Mind, using ArchLinux I get vanilla KDE packages. Which distro are you using? Perhaps the devs of your distro destroyed this functionality unwittingly...

Woho, finally someone other than me linked to the Plasma HowTo!
![]() Maybe it's because the "Search and Launch" desktop doesn't handle drag events correctly. Try to open Dolphin and type applications:/ in the location bar. Go to an application and drag its icon to the panel (with your widgets unlocked) - does it work? Make sure you drag it to an empty space in the panel, not over a widget such as the activity bar.

tried that, but it does not work. i get a "forbitten" sign except over system tray, where i got a small hand, but nothing happens.
there is not much empty space, but between widgets does not work either... |

Hm, that's strange. Can you create a new empty panel (I haven't used Plasma Netbook so I don't know exactly how it works)? Can you drop icons in it?
Yes, when I said "empty space" I meant the space between widgets.

no, or at least i haven't found out how.
i don't get the plasma symbol on the panel when i unlock widgets as on "desktop" so configuration of the panel is also not possible. it looks like: ![]() i kind of got the impression, that it is maybe not a panel at all, but simply looks like one... is that possible? |

What happens when you simply double click on any old widget - it should get added to the panel. This is just a "proof of concept" suggestion. If it works I'm sure you can make the icon work as well...

well it works yet it does not add them to the panel but they are located at the bottom. (i'm not on my netbook so i can't show how it looks right now)

If I understand you correctly it goes on the desktop rather than the panel. afaik if you simply right click on the desktop and select "add widgets" the resulting widget will be added to the desktop. If, however, you open the kidney thing on the right of the panel and go through the "add widget" procedure the resulting widget is placed in the panel.
Can you reproduce that?

not exactly: if i switch to "desktop" it works as expected. as you describe.
but with "netbook" i don't have a kidney thing on the panel and can not put any widgets into the panel whatever i try. they go automatically to the desktop. |

Thanks rohell,
I just noticed on one of your screenshots that you don't have the cashew thing on your top panel!? Could that be a reason for the mishap? An alternative would be to try and right click on the panel (in a "free" area) to call up the panel's "add widget" dialogue. If that doesn't work I suggest getting onto www.kubuntuforums.net because what you are experiencing isn't standard KDE behaviour. But by all means keep us updated! Or are there any other Kubuntu users here who can confirm/reproduce this?

I have similar behavior to the reported above when using "Search and Launch" layout on kubuntu 11.04:
