No more activities

Fri Jun 10, 2011 6:53 pm
I was looking here: viewtopic.php?f=67&t=88609&p=197745#p197745 and wending my way to the relocated check box "Differnt _w_idgets for each desktop". Unfortunately, I did not back up all my ~/.kde* subdirectories before clicking, "Apply". Now I am hosed. All activities have stopped. Background is black. Desktop menus are gone. The activity bar at the bottom is gone. No cashew. No way to start new apps, so I am afraid to shut down, but I'll have to. Are there any log files about I can capture before I do? And, the big question:

WHAT DO I DO NOW?

Thank you. >:(

this will reset the plasma desktop to the default while saving the current one
Code: Select all
kquitapp plasma-desktop
 sleep 20s
 mkdir -p $HOME/plasma-config/
 mv $(kde4-config --localprefix)/share/config/plasma-desktop* $HOME/plasma-config/
 plasma-desktop &

no idea about how to reset activities though, might be by renaming your ~/.kde/share/config/activitymanagerrc file while kde is not running (note: file is under ~/.kde or ~/.kde4 depending on your distro)

Thanks, but plasma-desktop was already quite dead. I had to restart. But now I know how to back it up, too! Thank you. Meanwhile, I have learned that I have created a couple of dozen "activities", only one of which has any applications in it. The activity manager seems to only allow me to add to them.

Do this:
Code: Select all
<right-click on root>
<select "activities">
<click any but the right one somewhere in the middle>
and all my apps disappear, seemingly no longer available. Since all activities are marked, "new activity" they are pretty indistinguishable. It seems that organizing my work based on virtual desk tops is basically dead and I am forced to learn this activity stuff. It would be nice if I felt like I had some control over this activity stuff. I guess I'll stick with one activity with lots and lots of windows. Dang.
