I have the "gmail" app active. It causes a temporary freeze of plasma-desktop, when checking for new mail. Can this be avoided?
I'm running Kubuntu-64 bit(11.04-stable).

This is likely due how that specific applet checks the mail, probably using blocking input/output. As plasmoids run in-process, the net effect is the delay you're observing.
