If I have .desktop shortcut files under ~/Desktop/, and I set that path in my Folder View widget, it properly shows the shortcuts by their name (Firefox, VLC, LibreOffice, et al.) However, if I do the same setup, except under any other folder, such as ~/.favorites/, it shows the shortcuts by their file names (MozillaFirefox.desktop, VLC.desktop, startcenter.desktop, et al.) I want to have different Folder View widgets for different sets of shortcuts (Games, Documents, Favorites), but if I choose any folder other than ~/Desktop/, it looks odd because it doesn't show the friendly application name. Is there a way to get around this? |

Well, you can always simply remove the .desktop ending of the filename.

Can't believe I overlooked a simple solution. But it is still peculiar that Folder View behaves in this inconsistent manner. |

I guess it has to do with the desktop:/ kioslave - try it in Dolphin and you'll see the same behavior. Unfortunately I don't know any other solution than the one provided above.
