Hi!
I'm new to kde, so plz bear with me I'm used to having the taskbar on the left side (like in unity). But when I move put it vertical, the window icons no longer group, they just shrink as you open more of them. I didn't find anything on this issue by googling, can someone plz advice? |

did they group when the bar was horizontal?
normally you would open task manager settings and change the grouping option to "by program name" by right clicking on the task manager -> task manager settings -> grouping and sorting -> ....... |

Yes, they do. I'm stressing that they don't in vertical.
This is the post I did in ubuntuforums - it has screens http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11402489&postcount=1 |

I can't duplicate it, when I place my panel vertically the apps group correctly
can you create and try as a different user? |

do KDE apps group correctly? I see skype and something I don't recognize not grouping but does multiple copies of Dolphin?
have you tried other task managers? fancy, smooth or icontasks? not sure which, if any, Kubuntu provides I checked bugs.kde.org and nothing similar has been reported |

If you want grouping all the time uncheck "Only when the taskbar is full".
You might also want to checkout Icon Tasks if you want your taskbar to behave more like in e.g. Unity.

Thanks guys for your help.
The system has frozen so I restarted. I was duplicating dolphin with ctrl+n in horizontal. If I press ctrl+n and wait a sec the windows are grouped correctly. If I press it multiple times in a row, only one of the instances is added to the group, the other are created "standalone". Which looks like a bug to me.. Then I moved the panel vertical and everything was still grouped! I tried with dolphin and skype and the grouping was working. Maybe it was the restart? Will play with it for a while, will mark if the problem is solved. |

Ok, if I remove the taskbar from the vertical panel and put it back - windows are not grouped no matter what.
Logout seems to help. Tried also other task managers. Fancy is unstable, smooth seems to be the most configurable. Icon tasks has this stupid effect to bring up the window on tooltip hover. And of course it cannot be turned off |

No no, it's not the tooltips that are the problem.
I like the win7 style when the window thumbnail pops up, but in addition the current active window is "dimmed" or whatever the term is and the view is a total mess. Check out the screen. FF is active and I hover the amarok . BTW if I disable the tooltip, the thumb is not shown but instead I get this ugly effect "for free" Smooth has the same ugly effect when I hover the thumbnail. So I have to stick with the default. |

I guess I've found the cause - it was the Highlight Window desk effect. Got it disabled and can try Icon/Smooth again
