I switched to "Folder View" for the Desktop, and now it resembles a classical desktop where one can freely move items around. Is there any way (even if deeply hidden with need for scripting?) to disable the selection markers (+/-signs) like it is possible for dolphin?

As far as I know, no. What bothers you about them? If it's the appearance, you can remove the selection markers in your desktop theme.
