Activities settings revert to "original" - by design or faul

I am experimenting with Activities. So I set one up for "support", using Search & Launch for the fun of it. I btw have to change the desktop layout first even if I choose the "search & launch" template.

I then fix some applications to it, related to internet, remote access etc.

This "sticks" for a session, sometimes longer. But sooner or later it reverts to "search & launch" default settings.

Is this by design or is it perhaps due to Plasma Desktop crashing now and then? For now it feels a bit pointless to start over every now and then.

I am on Kubuntu 11.10 amd64 using KDE 4.7.3

Kind regards
Sinclair ???

In order to activities to play nice with reboots, since there's not a proper association mechanism yet, you can do the following:

  • Enable "start previously saved session" in the session manager (System Settings)
  • Set all the applications in the activities to your pleasure
  • Open the activity controller, stop the activity (you must be on another one for this to work). That will close down the applications but will keep their state known to the system.
  • Save the session from the K menu

After booting, if you restart the activity you paused beforehand, you'll notice all your applications restarting and keeping the state you left them in.

Actually it seems to be enough to set KDE to "restore previous session". I normally don't as I am not fond of x number of applications starting just because I either did not quit them or forgot they were running.

Less than intuitive but thanks for the help, now it feels a bit more worthwhile to keep experimenting.

any idea how the Photo Activity is supposed to work? It is just a blank desktop on my machine.

Unfortunately I started fiddling with activities before such templates were introduced, so all I have are customized ones... I'm not sure how you can use that, in fact.

If it is blank, it is an installation issue.

Photos activity (IIRC) has a few photo plasmoids on the desktop... and something else. And it automatically starts digikam and gwenview.

You are likely right on the install issue, my "seach & launch" was equally blank desktop until I changed it.

Not sure Activities are ready yet - I used krdc to our server via an activity and it is like the keyboard gets remapped.. works perfect via "normal" virtual desktop

Activities have nothing to do with anything keyboard-related.

possibly you are right and it is a local problem. If you can, try this: set up a searc/launch activity. Use krdc to connect to a windows2003/8 server. try add a user in active directory and type the letter "e".

when I do that windows explorer opens, the normal outcome of pressing "windows/meta"+e

if I do this via a virtual desktop I get no such experience. Where the meta key gets involved is beyond me.

Suddenly can not reproduce the behaviour... weird. All now works as expected
