I love the KDE environment.... I just wanted to state that out loud.
When I first installed kubuntu I put a folder on my desktop that points to my pictures directory. I was able to click the little plus sign on the icon and a folder windows popped out (which it still does). I was able to find sub folders and finally come to a picture. It used to pop out a preview of that picture when I hovered over them. Now nothing. I can navigate to them while still on the desktop, but the pictures themselves don't show up.I would like to insert here that I can see a tiny preview in the actual box, but nothing pops out when I hover over it. This is a great feature that I had lost somehow. I dug around the web and these forums, but all i am getting is it's a tool-tip issue or a preview issue. I went into dolphin and changed some preview settings there, but I am not sure if that affects the desktop. How do I re-enable this feature. Was it something I might have uninstalled? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Right click on the desktop (or widget) -> Folder View Settings... -> Display -> check "Previews".

I did that, but that only shows teeny, tiny previews on the icon itself. Am I explaining this properly?
This is how I got it setup: Activity is Desktop icons. Folder view settings> Display> Previews......checked. Configure previews> comic books, desktop, directories, images, jpeg images.... all checked. With an empty desktop I used to click a little "up" arrow on the icon that opens a small box/popup showing the contents of that particular folder. When hovering over another folder within, it would again pop out with its contents displayed. {That all still happens} When hovering over an image a bigger picture used to pop out. This does not happen anymore. Maybe it's the new kernel. Or maybe it's just something that hogged resources? I don't know what to try next. It isn't the end of the world if I can't get it fixed. It was a nice little interactive feature of the system though. I also just noticed that it doesn't work on my laptop either.......hmmmm (Desktop) Kubuntu 11.1 OS: Linux 3.0.0-13-generic KDE: 4.7.2(4.7.2) (laptop) Kubuntu 11.1 OS: Linux 3.0.0-12-generic KDE: 4.7.2(4.7.2) |

I just finished a clean install on my new laptop.
Dell inspiron 17R I now see that it doesn't work there either, before changing any settings. It must be an updated version of KDE. Oh well not a big deal. For the record I would like to say the previews do work that same way within dolphin. From the desktop though it does not. Thanks for your help, I appreciate it. |

Interesting, I get at least a thumbnail and some minimal metadata on a image file shown when I try on my KDE Trunk system. See http://wstaw.org/m/2011/12/14/plasma-desktopBT1760.png

Hey thanks I am inspired to keep trying....f 11.1 all up-to-date and pop out. I don't know what a trunk system is but I am going to look for something like that. This is all I get. As you can see the function partially works. I am currently hovering over a JPG file in this picture...... But hey, thanks I am inspired to keep trying.... |

Just wondering, do you have Tooltips disabled in Dolphin? Also, check under Display > More Preview Options, and make sure "Images" is checked.

OMG
You are the man. Tooltips was checked in fact, Also in more preview options images and JPG was checked. But hearing tooltips reminded me of a certain setting I normally turn off. System Settings>Work space Behavior>Work space(left panel) I unchecked the show informational tips. So I ticked that, and all was there, all was well. Perfect. Just goes to show you shouldn't mess with everything all at once. I find it's impossible to remember everything I change. Good thing I didn't do that to my network, now if I can just tune that right. Thank you for all the help. You are an amazing Admin, Extremely patient [Problem Solved] |
