Replace KDE 4.8's Qt with Qt 5.0

Thu Jan 26, 2012 10:30 pm
I just installed Kubuntu 11.10 and upgraded to KDE 4.8.

Now I'd like to install Qt 5.0 (I've built that from source) such that KDE plasmoids will use Qt 5.0.

Is this possible? I can't figure out how to do it.

Best,
Aidan

You will not be able to use KDE 4.8 with Qt 5 because Qt 5 is not API-compatible with KDE 4.8. In other words, KDE will be looking for bits of Qt that are changed, renamed, moved or deleted, and thus will not work. Qt 5 is a long way from release, anyway, you should not be using it for anything right now.

That makes sense. Is it possible perhaps to force a plasmoid to use Qt 5, or would that not work either? (I suspect it's not possible, but a man can hope, can't he?)

Qt 5 is admittedly in very rough alpha, but QML 2.0 is interesting enough that I want to experiment with it right now, even though I have no illusions about real stability.

No, because plasma needs to be compiled against Qt 5 in order for this to happen, which is almost certainly cannot be. Further, other parts of KDE also would need to be compiled against Qt 5 (like kdelibs). So unfortunately this is not possible at present, and probably will not be possible at least until after Qt 5's API freezes. Once that happens, and there is a KDE branch that supports Qt 5, you should be able to install it into your home directory and use plasmoidviewer to try out QML 2 plasmoids.

Oh, I wonder if you can swap in Qt 4.8 and use that in KDE 4.8. (looks like it uses Qt 4.7.4 as it stands)

I'll start a new thread.
