Anyone have any idea why my desktop (in folderview mode, which should be displaying the contents of my home folder), is now empty?
Is this to gently encourage me to have a bunch of weather widgets and temperature sensors and stuff on my desktop instead? Also, a peculiar scrollbar has appeared on the right side of the screen. How can I remove it? Should I edit the source code, perhaps?

Can you post a screenshot showing your problem?

Thought I'd solved it but it (the blank screen and the dodgy scrollbar) comes back if I logout or reboot.
How can I post a screenshot? Do I have to upload it somewhere? Here's a link anyhow. Notice the scrollbar on the right. And the lack of any folders or files on the desktop. Ignore the bouncing icon in the middle of the screen. http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/85 ... ot1aa.png/ If I change from folderview, to desktop, and then back again, I get folders on the desktop again.

Yes e.g. a image hosting service and then post the link here.

Yup, all done... Sadly, the traditional "rename the entire .kde4 folder" solution fixes this problem. I wish I didn't have to do this every time KDE gets a major upgrade...

That looks strange, probably something wrong in the configuration. Try this:
1. Change to Desktop and back to Folder View. You should get icons on the desktop again right? 2. Press Alt+F2 and run
This tells Plasma Desktop to quit gracefully, so your desktop and panels will disappear. 3. Run Plasma Desktop again with
(again, from e.g. Alt+F2). Does it look normal?

Cheers Hans, I'll try that with my old KDE folder and see what happens...

Followed your procedure, I still have desktop folder icons after doing it like that. How strange that it doesn't work if you logout.

Have you tried to logout and log in again?

Yes, I did try, it did not stay good for long.
Anyway, found the problem. If you have "start with an empty session" in startup/shutdown options, that causes the problem. If you check "restore previous session", it behaves normally. And, if you type "plasma-desktop" under "applications to be excluded from sessions", and check start with empty session, this fixes problem completely. Hoorah...I hope! Thanks for the help! |

What do you mean by "2 desktop with different widgets'? 2 Activities/ 2 virtual desktops / 2 monitors? Please, proceed to https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=253485 and report the issue there.
