I need to write an applet that communicate with a background application. This applet should show some information from the background application when the user click on it or at regular interval time.

Which is the best way to implement this applet?

A plasma applet?
A KStatusNotifierItem?
A KStatusNotifierItem + dbus menu?
Can I add an extender to a A KStatusNotifierItem (to make it like a popupapplet)?

Where can I found documentation about KStatusNotifierItem? Which program use this technology?
