Hi,
I've been using KMyMoney for several years with no problems at all, but the version I'm using is still 1.0 something! I've recently started to move across to another laptop and have just installed 4.5.3 from the Ubuntu repositories. I opened up my 1.0-based KMyMoney file and, in terms of my accounts and their balances it all seems OK. I had an error message saying that the consistency check was complaining about "no starting balance" on a few of the accounts, but otherrwise everything looks fine. I've yet to do any serious checks but, before I start, bearing in mind that I've hopped straight from v1.0 to v4.5.3, would you expect me to find any problems. I know that there's a 4.6.x version available, but 4.5.3 is listed as a stable release and I wanted the easy option of loading from the repositories rather than building my own system. If anyone can give me any guidance as to what problems I might encounter with my jump from v1.0 to v4.5.3, I'd be very grateful. Many thanks, Mike |

Hi Mike,
I'm using 4.6.1 without any problems. I can't remember when I switched from the v1.0 version but I didn't have to do anything special, I made a back-up of the original data file, installed v4 and used it to open my original .kmy file and carried on working. What distro are you using? claydoh provides a ppa for a very current stable version (at this time 4.6.1) here: https://launchpad.net/~claydoh/+archive/kmymoney2-kde4 Add this to your repository and it will install everything without you having to build it yourself. I can tell you that I was using version 1.0.5 and 4.* in parallel for a long time. I never had a serious problem from which I couldn't recover. Even being stuck with a 4.5.3 is not a big deal, I guess. And all that on OSX! I assure you there exist still Mac-specific pitfalls, but I prefer to use version 4 instead of the old version 1 by now. Although I was switching back and forth between these versions for years I've never managed to corrupt my KMY file.

Thanks guys.
I'll still do a bit of testing and parallel running, but it helps to know that it's likely to work without serious problems. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 under Parallels 7. Based on just a few days experience it seems to work flawlessly. I went the virtual machine route because I wanted to be able to flip between Mac, Windows and Linux. Mike |

I am running kmymoney4(-devel) ports on Mac OSX 10.6 almost no problem. The KMY can be used on Linux and MacOSX in parallel. No need for making use of Parallels at all.
