I've just tried entering a loan, beginning by entering the loan amount as the principal balance at 01/01/12. Although the loan is listed among my liabilities on the home screen, the principal does not appear; instead, it shows a zero balance. Subsequent montly payments then appear as a positive balance. Is this normal, or am I doing something wrong?

Why didn't you use the wizard that creates the monthly payments, etc? If you want to handle a loan manually, you are better off using a simple liability account rather than a loan one.

I did use the Wizard.
