I have two computers one running Mint LMDE using Debian Testing (Gnome based) and one using Solydx (a Mint derivative) also using Debian Testing (KDE based).

Each have Kmymoney 4.6.2-3.2 installed.

To Update Stock Market prices with LMDE it is necessary to use the Tools Menu to update them with Solydx you can use the Update Stock Market Prices from the Tool Bar.

Can any body tell me why?

Have you tried editing the toolbar on the system which does not have the icon and adding the update stock market prices item?
Toolbars can be changed by right clicking on them > Configure Toolbars.

I have tried editing the toolbar but even with Update stock Market Prices selected the image in the tool bar remains shaded.

It is quite unusual that a action would be disabled in the toolbar, while it is fully enabled in the menu - especially when this is the same version of the application. Is there any difference in the installed versions of KDE or Qt?

The LMDE machine is gnome based and it supports kmymoney(up to date kde) and Knoda(kde 3.5 ish).
To ensure that Knoda loads its 'constituents' are hand loaded a package at a time. After this has been completed kmymoney is loaded from repositaries.
What you see in the attached is the result.
Solydx is hardcore KDE.

In this case, it is probably a lack of packages on the LMDE machine which is causing this. I don't have any insights into the code base as to why it would disable stock market updates unfortunately, so it will need a developer to comment.

Both machines do appear to be using the same base version of KDE however.

Just to be sure: you're using SolydK, and not SolydX, right?
SolydX is Debian testing + Xfce, and SolydK is Debian testing + KDE.

I bet there is a version difference in the dependencies.
Try to do a

on both systems and check their versions.

You are right I am using Solydk - kde.
kmymoney loaded from your repository.

"apt-cache depends kmymoney", produces identical outputs from both machines which both have 4.6.2-3.2 loaded. I believe that they were both ultimately from Debian Testing.

I was hoping that somebody would know which programme/library controls the operation of the toolbar so that we could update it or whatever it needs.
Obviously the LMDE edition has only the kde packages demanded by the kmymoney programme and the old 3.5 packages demanded by knoda whereas your Solydk
will carry the full kde with all of its bells and whistles.

I will go away and have a good rake of the two lists.

I would suggest checking both kdelibs and Qt in this case, as toolbars can be affected by functionality in both.
