Investment Transactions wont import

Tue Nov 19, 2013 12:41 pm
Hello.
Been running KMy Money for some time okay. I have been using a data base with records going back to 09. I have however records going back to 06 so I have compiled a separate new database and imported all my accounts etc fromMS Money and sorted any teething problems. I have managed to import all cash transfers from my banking accounts to my investment accounts as well. I have tried many times to import the actual buy and sell security entries both from MS money and my existing KM data base as a qIF into the correct investment account but it wont import. It goes through the process, but doesn't throw out errors I have set up all the securities too . I have tried several times but no transactions will import. Any ideas :'( would be very welcome

It may take several tries, but you should be able to do it. I imported 20 years of transactions and finally succeeded. First thing is to set up all accounts and all securities before you start importing. Next thing is to use divide-and-conquer: if there is a problem, split up your QIF file repeatedly, until you have isolated a single transaction which does not import correctly. If you cannot fix it yourself, get back here, and we can help figure it out. You may also want to search this forum for problems with QIF import of transactions/brokerage accounts.

Thanks so much for that. What I did was create a new database. A database with all complete facilities reimported my Quicken file and yes my investments came in. The Portfolio I currently use is fine and all the entries I have on all accounts are okay. I can change anything. Only problem I have is that my old portfolio I no longer use came in but with only ONE investment security. The buys and sell total were fine It renamed all the others as this one security. This account will not allow me to amend delete or change anything it wont even mark the entries as reconciled. I can move them to another account but again I cannot alter anything. I cannot even delete this account and re enter the buys and sell manually which would take only half an hour. From a monetary viewpoint its okay. From a total record accuracy viewpoint it is not. Any ideas?? I really am a stickler for accurate records. The program is doing what it wants to and not what I want it to do. Its not really a big deal I suppose as everything else is okay its fine. What made me chuckle was our Vet is named Priory Vet and all the entries got renamed "church" ..wonderful.

Just to make sure I understand: one investment account imported all transactions but changed all security names to the same thing? Even if you had defined those investments upfront? I assume the format of the QIF records for these transactions is the same as for the ones that wer imported properly?

Are you sure that the old account was open when you did the import, and still is open? You cannot change the ledger of a closed account. Also, does the opening date of that account precede the first transaction?

Thanks so very much. you're a star. I did note that the opening dates on these accounts was November20th 2013 so I put the correct date on both the Portfolio and Brokerage. What had also happened was that the cash transactions had been put in a third account called Selftrade (cash) account. So I renamed this account Selftrade (brokerage) and deleted Selftrade (cash) ensured all the opening dates were correct and hey presto it all worked. I changed all the securities to the correct names and reconciled the accounts. Thanks so very much. The only thing is I can close the Brokerage cash account but cannot close or hide Selftrade portfolio as the account is no longer used. It has a zero balance too. Is that normal?? I knew there would be a way of sorting the problem out. I have also downloaded my bank statements up to date and all imported and mostly all the transactions self categorized. Wonderful!! :-)

Make sure the account is actually zero, with no cents lying around. And also verify there are no schedules referencing that account.

In order to close your investment account, I think you may need to close all securities it references. Hei Ku may confirm this, but I believe you can only close a parent account if all its dependencies have been closed.

Beware, however, of a major drawback if you close securities and accounts: they will no longer appear in your net worth graphs.
