Some time ago, one of my investments underwent a stock split of 1:20, turning my 15 shares into 300.
On 09/01 of the next year, this investment, together with a second one, was closed by the issuer and replaced by a new one. The only correct way I know of to enter this in KMM is using add/remove shares (w.r.t. net gain&loss and taxes). On 11/22 of the year of the merger, about half of the new shares were sold. When generating a Net Worth report for that year, I noticed that the Remove Shares transactions were included as a Sell. The value of the sell was computed using the last known price, which unfortunately dated from before the split. As a result, it was off by a factor 20. KMM should search for possible splits every time an obsolete price is applied. Since this search could be slow, a split could be propagated back in time the moment it is entered by the user. I believe Microsoft Money used to do that. The split was applied to all previous database entries( numbers of shares as well as prices stored). Consecutive splits would override older ones. On the other hand, the Add Shares were not included as a Buy in the report. As a result, the ending balance (Amount column) was only about half of the Starting Balance, which is clearly wrong. The first part (price after stock split) is in fact what was filed under bug 312135 |
