Assigning categories without import

Sat Feb 01, 2014 2:47 am
Working with categories might be fine if one just starts a new account with slowly building a list of payees and related categories.

BUT if I import hundreds of transactions at once and I want setup the payees step by step for the right categories, I miss a function to rematch the transactions with a changed set of payees / categories relations WITHOUT import. Wouldn't it be nice if one sets the category for a payee, that all the transactions are automatically assigned to that category?

In Thunderbird it is possible to run the filters again on folders and it is very helpful to refine the filters and testing them without waiting more incoming emails.

But maybe I missed a way to do what I need.

Thanks for your attention,
Chris

I would probably tackle the problem as follows: open the ledger view, filter by payee name using the search field, select all transactions e.g. using Ctrl+A and assign the category I want using the regular edit function to them. Does that work for you?

Great that helps a lot!
I did miss an item in the context menu to set the category for all selected transactions, but with "edit" it works fine.

Still I would appreciate and recommend that one is able to refine the matching via the payees and having a function to redo the matching on all transactions the same way, as it is done while importing transactions.
Why? Because the setting of the categories via selection and edit is a manual act. But don't we all appreciate if things happen automatically by having a smart matching mechanism?
Even better if the "matcher" is able to report conflicts between it's automatic matching and categories set manually.

Anyway thank you for the immediate answer and the way to set categories manually.
